Ontario HRSP - Up to $10,000 for Solar + Battery
Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP), launched January 2025, offers:
- Up to $5,000 for solar panels ($1,000/kW)
- Battery storage at $300/kWh up to $5,000 (requires approximately 13.3 kWh to reach the cap)
- HRSP maximums are per category rather than one shared pot: up to $10,000 for solar and storage, up to $12,000 for heat pumps, up to $7,700 for insulation
Important – HRSP vs. Net Metering: Solar installed under HRSP must be sized for on-site load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. Brampton Roofs Vary More Than Any Average Suggests
The systems Xolar has installed around Brampton vary enormously — modest arrays on city roofs, and much larger ones out towards Caledon. Any single figure for what a Brampton home needs would be an average of things that are not alike. What matters more than the average is Ontario’s 12 kW line: at or under it your project is micro-embedded generation and takes the shorter connection route, and above it the standard embedded generation process applies. The Ontario Energy Board raised that ceiling from 10 kW on 1 May 2026 — it is a provincial rule Alectra applies, not an Alectra policy. Some of ours have crossed it. At 1,160 kWh per kW a year, Brampton rewards getting the size right rather than getting it big.
Solar Generates Hardest During the Hours Ontario Charges Most For
Ontario does not charge one price for electricity. Under the regulated Time-of-Use rates it charges 9.8 cents off-peak, 15.7 mid-peak and 20.3 on-peak — a spread of more than two to one between the cheapest hour and the dearest.
That matters more for solar than the headline rate does, because a rooftop array does not produce evenly through the day. It produces around the middle of it. The hours when a south-facing roof is doing its best work are the same hours the province prices highest, which means the electricity you displace is expensive electricity rather than average electricity.
The practical consequence is that the value of a Brampton system is not simply its annual kilowatt-hours multiplied by some blended rate. A kilowatt-hour you generate at two in the afternoon in July is worth roughly double one you would have drawn at eleven at night. It is why the page quotes an average saving of $2,200 a year here on a 10 kW system, on 1,160 kWh per kW of annual production.
The same logic runs in reverse for consumption you cannot move. A household that runs its dryer, dishwasher and car charger in the evening is buying at off-peak prices anyway, so solar displaces less of what it costs most. Shifting heavy loads into daylight is not a gimmick in Ontario — it is how you make the on-peak rate work for you rather than against you.
Brampton is distributed by Alectra Utilities, but none of this is an Alectra rule. Time-of-Use pricing is set provincially by the Ontario Energy Board and applies the same way to every regulated-price customer in the province.
