Prince Edward Island

Solar panels in Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island offers excellent 1:1 net metering through Maritime Electric — surplus is credited at the full retail rate (14.37¢/kWh on the first 2,000 kWh) — and a strong 1,104+ kWh/kW solar resource. Payback typically runs 12–16 years today.

One catch on timing: the efficiencyPEI Solar Electric Rebate has been paused since September 5, 2025, pending 2026-27 funding. When active it paid $0.50/watt up to $5,000 — worth confirming status before you plan. Note that net-metering credits expire annually on October 31, so sizing to your usage matters.

SolarEdge vs Growatt inverters

PEI's full-retail net metering is among the best structures in Canada. With the efficiencyPEI rebate paused, payback rests on that 1:1 credit and the Island's solid solar resource — and because credits expire each October 31, right-sizing to annual use is important.

How your system works behind the meter

Most of a Prince Edward Island system's value comes from power used behind the meter — electricity your panels make and your home uses on the spot, offsetting energy you'd otherwise buy at 14.37¢/kWh. Only the surplus flows past the meter to Maritime Electric for 1:1 net-metering credit.

Prince Edward Island solar questions

What is the PEI solar rebate in 2026?

The efficiencyPEI Solar Electric Rebate has been paused since September 5, 2025, pending 2026-27 funding approval, and remains paused as of April 2026.

It is not currently available to new applicants.

When open, the program offered $0.50/watt for homeowners (max $5,000), $1.25/watt for farms (max $35,000), and $0.35/watt for businesses (max $10,000).

Pre-approval was required before installation.

Check efficiencyPEI.ca for updates on program resumption.

How does PEI net metering work?

PEI’s net metering with Maritime Electric is excellent – excess energy is credited at the full retail rate (14.37¢/kWh for the first 2,000 kWh block).

This is among the best net metering structures in Canada and significantly accelerates your payback period.

Credits expire annually on October 31st, so it is important to size your system to your usage.

What financing is available in PEI?

The Energy Efficiency Loan Program (EELP-SERP) offers financing for up to 100% of your solar installation cost at 5% interest over up to 15 years.

However, the loan currently requires efficiencyPEI rebate pre-approval, and that rebate program is paused as of April 2026.

PACE Atlantic financing is available in Charlottetown and Stratford as an alternative.

Check efficiencyPEI.ca for updates on both programs.

What is the payback period in PEI?

With the efficiencyPEI rebate currently paused and the corrected Maritime Electric rate of 14.37¢/kWh (down from a previously stated higher rate), the typical payback period is approximately 12-16 years without the rebate.

If the rebate resumes and you qualify for the $5,000 homeowner amount, payback could improve.

Net metering at full retail rate and PEI’s strong solar resource (1,104 kWh/kW) support long-term savings.

What size solar system can I install on Prince Edward Island?

Maritime Electric’s net metering program allows a renewable generator up to 100 kW, which is far above any typical home system, so residential rooftop solar is well within the limit.

Installations of 30 kW and larger may require three-phase power.

We size your system to your home’s usage during the site assessment.

Is Maritime Electric's net metering open to new customers, and how do I join?

Yes, the program is open to new residential customers.

To take part you use a renewable source such as solar, generate power to supply your own property, be a year-round (not seasonal) Maritime Electric customer, and apply to enter a net metering agreement.

Your exported energy is credited on a one-to-one kilowatt-hour basis and any unused credit carries forward.

Xolar handles the application and agreement for you.

Why Solar Works on Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island pairs a solid solar resource with one of the more favourable net metering arrangements left in Canada. Charlottetown produces roughly 1,103 kWh per kW installed per year, and cool maritime summers keep panels operating near their rated efficiency instead of derating in heat.

Maritime Electric charges about 14.37 cents per kWh (effective March 2025), and surplus solar is credited at the full retail rate under a genuine 1:1 arrangement. That is increasingly rare – British Columbia closed its equivalent in July 2026. Every kilowatt-hour your system exports offsets one you would otherwise buy at the same price, which makes sizing far more forgiving here than in provinces paying a reduced export credit.

One detail worth planning around: credits expire on October 31 each year rather than rolling forward. A system built well beyond your annual consumption gives that surplus away, so the right target is to match your yearly usage, not exceed it.

PEI Solar Incentives & Financing (2026)

Energy Efficiency Loan Program – up to $25,000

Provincial financing covering solar and other home energy upgrades – the largest single financing envelope of any province Xolar serves. It lets most Island homeowners install with no upfront cost and repay from the resulting bill reduction.

Net Metering at Full Retail

Residential systems up to 100 kW are eligible, with exported energy credited at the full retail rate. Credits expire October 31 annually.

Federal Programs

The Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in March 2024 and the Greener Homes Loan closed in October 2025. Neither is available; the provincial loan is the active route.
