Solar Panel Costs & Savings in New Brunswick

A typical residential solar installation in New Brunswick costs $2.75 to $3.50 per watt, putting a 6-8 kW system in the $16,500 to $28,000 range before incentives. After any applicable Total Home Energy Savings rebate, the net cost is reduced further.

NB Power rates have increased significantly in recent years, with the rate now at 15.39¢/kWh following a 4.29% EUB-approved increase effective April 14, 2026. Solar panels lock in your energy costs for 25-30 years, protecting you from future NB Power rate increases and providing long-term savings.

The typical payback period in New Brunswick is 9-13 years, after which you benefit from 15-20 years of near-zero electricity costs.

New Brunswick Solar Incentives (2026)

Total Home Energy Savings Program

New Brunswick’s Total Home Energy Savings Program offered a flat $200/kW rebate (up to $3,000) for qualifying solar PV installations. Registration closed May 27, 2026; no new applicants are being accepted. Registered applicants must have installations complete by January 31, 2027. Contact saveenergynb.ca to confirm the status of any existing registration.

NB Power Net Metering

New Brunswick’s net metering program allows homeowners with grid-connected solar to earn credits for excess energy exported to the grid at the full retail rate (currently 15.39¢/kWh). NB Power credits your account for surplus generation, offsetting your electricity costs during lower-production winter months. Credits expire annually on March 31, so sizing your system to your annual usage is important.

Disclosure: NB Power has filed a proposal to change net metering effective April 1, 2027, which would replace 1:1 credits with a buy rate of 6.77¢/kWh and a sell rate of 9.22¢/kWh, plus a $13/kW demand charge. Customers who connect to the grid by October 31, 2026 may be grandfathered under the existing terms. This change is proposed and pending approval by the Energy and Utilities Board; it has not yet been approved.

Federal Greener Homes Programs – Closed

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in March 2024, and the Greener Homes Loan closed October 1, 2025. Neither is available to new applicants. Provincial incentives through the Total Home Energy Savings Program (registration now closed) were the primary complementary option.

Xolar's New Brunswick Service Areas

Xolar installs solar panels across 4 New Brunswick cities:

Note: Saint John Energy operates independently from NB Power. While NB Power offers 1:1 net metering credits at retail rate (expiring March 31 annually), Saint John Energy credits excess generation at approximately 8.15¢/kWh (90% of avoided cost) – well below the retail rate. This difference affects how you should size your system, and we help you optimize for your specific utility. NB Power charges a meter-change and service fee for grid connection; budget for this in your total installation cost.

Protect Yourself from Rising Electricity Costs

The more you pay for electricity, the more you benefit by going solar.

Electricity rates across New Brunswick have risen steadily over the past several years, and further increases are expected.

Locking in your energy costs with solar protects your household from future rate hikes.

By generating your own power, you reduce your dependence on the grid and keep more money in your pocket every month.

Net Metering Program

How Net Metering Works in New Brunswick

Your solar system connects to the grid through your utility's net metering or net billing program. The excess energy you produce earns credits that offset the power you draw from the grid, balancing your usage across day, night, and seasons.

In New Brunswick, the exact credit rate and rules are set by your local utility. A well-sized system can cover a large share of your electricity costs year-round.
