NB Power rates have risen significantly in recent years (two 9.8% increases in 2024-2025, plus a 4.29% EUB-approved increase effective April 14, 2026, bringing the rate to 15.39¢/kWh).

Does New Brunswick have net metering, and how does it work?

Yes.

NB Power’s net metering credits every kilowatt-hour your solar system sends to the grid against the power you later draw back, at the same retail rate.

Credits carry from month to month, and any unused balance resets to zero once a year on March 31.

Systems up to 100 kW qualify.

What happens to my net-metering credits at the end of the year?

Under NB Power’s current rules, banked kilowatt-hour credits carry over month to month but are set to zero every March 31 rather than paid out in cash.

A properly sized system is designed to use those credits within the year, so most of your production offsets your own bill instead of expiring.

Is NB Power's net metering program changing?

NB Power filed proposed changes with the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board in April 2026, with a proposed effective date of April 1, 2027.

The main change would add a demand charge that applies specifically to residential net-metering (solar) customers.

The changes are still pending regulatory approval and are not yet in effect.

Should I install solar before the net-metering changes take effect?

There is a real advantage to connecting sooner.

Under NB Power’s proposal, customers already approved before the new rules take effect would stay on the current net-metering terms for up to 10 years.

Homeowners who wait until after the changes take effect would fall under the new structure, including the proposed demand charge.

What solar rebates are available in New Brunswick in 2026?

Both federal homeowner programs have closed: the Canada Greener Homes Grant ended in 2024 and the Greener Homes Loan closed to new applications in October 2025, so there is no federal cash incentive for residential solar today.

New Brunswick Solar Incentives (2026)

Total Home Energy Savings Program

New Brunswick’s Total Home Energy Savings Program offered a flat $200/kW rebate (up to $3,000) for qualifying solar PV installations. Registration closed May 27, 2026; no new applicants are being accepted. Registered applicants must have installations complete by January 31, 2027. Contact saveenergynb.ca to confirm the status of any existing registration.

NB Power Net Metering

New Brunswick’s net metering program allows homeowners with grid-connected solar to earn credits for excess energy exported to the grid at the full retail rate (currently 15.39¢/kWh). NB Power credits your account for surplus generation, offsetting your electricity costs during lower-production winter months. Credits expire annually on March 31, so sizing your system to your annual usage is important.

Disclosure: NB Power has filed a proposal to change net metering effective April 1, 2027, which would replace 1:1 credits with a buy rate of 6.77¢/kWh and a sell rate of 9.22¢/kWh, plus a $13/kW demand charge. Customers who connect to the grid by October 31, 2026 may be grandfathered under the existing terms. This change is proposed and pending approval by the Energy and Utilities Board; it has not yet been approved.

Federal Greener Homes Programs – Closed

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in March 2024, and the Greener Homes Loan closed October 1, 2025. Neither is available to new applicants. Provincial incentives through the Total Home Energy Savings Program (registration now closed) were the primary complementary option.
