Solar panels in Truro, Nova Scotia

The best modelled sun in Nova Scotia — and the rate is what pays for it.

Truro is modelled at 1,150 kWh per kW a year — the highest figure of any Nova Scotia city on this site, ahead of New Glasgow at 1,130 and Halifax at 1,073. Payback runs 8 to 11 years and the average saving is about $1,800. The sunshine helps, but the reason the payback is short is Nova Scotia Power’s rate of 19.128 cents per kilowatt–hour, among the highest in Canada.

Nova Scotia Power charges 19.128 cents/kWh (effective May 1, 2026; base charge $20.08/mo) – among the highest rates in Canada, making solar an excellent investment. Truro is served by NS Power with 1:1 net metering at the full retail rate.

How your system works behind the meter

Most of a Truro system's value comes from power used behind the meter — electricity your panels make and your home uses on the spot, offsetting energy you'd otherwise buy at 19.1¢/kWh. Only the surplus flows past the meter to Nova Scotia Power for net-metering credit.

Solar Panels in Truro, Nova Scotia

Truro is served by Nova Scotia Power at 19.128 cents/kWh (effective May 2026). NS Power’s 1:1 net metering means you earn the same rate for excess solar as you pay. With production of 1,150 kWh/kW, payback is 8-11 years – among the shortest in Canada.

Truro’s central Nova Scotia location delivers strong solar production – higher than the provincial average and comparable to many Ontario cities.

The Part of a Nova Scotia Power Bill Solar Will Never Remove

Nova Scotia Power charges a base charge of $20.08 a month alongside its energy rate of 19.128 cents per kilowatt-hour, both effective 1 May 2026. The base charge is worth understanding before you read any savings estimate, because it behaves differently from everything else on the bill.

It is a fixed charge for being connected. It does not fall when you use less electricity, and it does not fall when you generate your own. Across a year it comes to roughly $241, and a Truro system that eliminated every kilowatt-hour you draw from the grid would still leave that on the account. Net metering credits offset the energy portion of the bill, not the fixed portion.

So a quote promising to zero your power bill is describing something that cannot happen in Nova Scotia. What solar can realistically remove is most or all of the energy charge — which, at 19.128 cents, is the expensive part and the reason the payback here is 8 to 11 years rather than the 12 to 16 common in provinces with better sun and cheaper power.

There is a second boundary worth knowing at the same time. Nova Scotia Power’s residential programme accepts systems up to 27 kW on your home’s meter, and up to 100 kW are eligible under the wider programme — but it does not purchase generation above what you consume in a calendar year. Building past your own annual usage earns nothing.

Both facts point the same way: start from twelve months of your actual bills, not from the roof.

Truro solar questions

How much does solar cost in Truro?

A 10 kW system in Truro costs $27,200-$29,500.

The SolarHomes rebate closed April 17, 2025.

NS Power’s 1:1 net metering still delivers strong payback of 8-11 years.

What is the payback period for solar in Truro?

With NS Power’s high rates (~19.1 cents/kWh as of May 2026) and 1:1 net metering, payback in Truro is 8-11 years.

Panels last 25+ years, providing 15+ years of near-zero energy costs.

Does Nova Scotia have 1:1 net metering?

Yes – NS Power’s enhanced net metering credits excess solar at the full retail rate (~19.1 cents/kWh as of May 2026).

Credits roll over 12 months, and year-end surplus credits are paid out at the retail rate.

Systems up to 27 kW use the simplified interconnection option; up to 100 kW are eligible.

What solar rebates are available in Truro?

The SolarHomes Program closed to new residential applicants on April 17, 2025.

NS Power’s 1:1 net metering credits excess solar at the full retail rate.

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant closed March 2024 and the Loan closed October 2025 – neither is available to new applicants.

Does Truro get the best sun in Nova Scotia?

On our modelled figures, yes — 1,150 kWh per kW a year, ahead of New Glasgow at 1,130, Amherst at 1,120, Bridgewater and Dartmouth at 1,100, Sydney at 1,080 and Halifax at 1,073.

But the whole province sits inside about seven per cent, so it is not a difference you would choose a house over.

What makes solar work in Nova Scotia is the electricity rate rather than the sunshine: at 19.128 cents per kilowatt-hour, among the highest in Canada, each kilowatt-hour you generate displaces expensive power.

That is why Truro’s payback of 8 to 11 years beats Saskatchewan cities that get 20 per cent more sun.

How big a system will Nova Scotia Power let me connect in Truro?

Larger than you are likely to need, but with a catch that matters more than the ceiling.

Nova Scotia Power’s residential option accepts systems up to 27 kW on your home’s meter, and systems up to 100 kW are eligible under the wider programme.

The binding constraint is different: NS Power does not purchase generation above what you use in a calendar year, so capacity beyond your own annual consumption earns nothing at all.

Take twelve months of bills, total the kilowatt-hours, and size to that.

Remember too that the $20.08 monthly base charge stays on the bill whatever you generate.
