Protect Yourself from Rising Electricity Costs

The more you pay for electricity, the more you benefit by going solar.

Electricity rates across Northwest Territories have risen steadily over the past several years, and further increases are expected.

Locking in your energy costs with solar protects your household from future rate hikes.

By generating your own power, you reduce your dependence on the grid and keep more money in your pocket every month.

Net Metering Program

How Net Metering Works in Northwest Territories

Your solar system connects to the grid through your utility's net metering or net billing program. The excess energy you produce earns credits that offset the power you draw from the grid, balancing your usage across day, night, and seasons.

In Northwest Territories, the exact credit rate and rules are set by your local utility. A well-sized system can cover a large share of your electricity costs year-round.

Solar FAQs for Northwest Territories Residents

Get answers to common questions about solar energy in Northwest Territories.

The Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) Renewable Energy Program offers $4.00/watt for solar, with residential rebates up to $20,000 and business/non-profit rebates up to $50,000.

The program is now open and accepts applications on a first-come, first-served basis.

Solar rebates are only available for off-grid buildings or communities that don’t use hydroelectricity.

If you’re in a hydro community, you can still install solar using Naka Power or NWT Power Corporation net metering (up to 15 kW), but without AEA funding assistance.

Both Naka Power and NWT Power Corporation offer net metering for systems up to 15 kW.

This allows residents in hydro communities to benefit from solar even without rebate eligibility.

Due to remote location and logistics, solar installation costs are higher in NWT than southern provinces.

However, with rebates covering $4/watt (up to $20,000 residential), the effective cost is significantly reduced for eligible properties.
