Morden is modelled at 1,285 kWh per kW a year and Winkler, ten minutes down the road, at 1,290. That is a difference of five kilowatt-hours per kilowatt per year — around 0.4 per cent, which is nothing.

Everything else is identical too: the same utility, the same 9.97-cent rate, the same 7.173-cent export credit, the same 15 to 22 year payback band, the same average saving of about $2,200. If you are comparing a Morden quote against one a neighbour received in Winkler, the towns explain none of the difference.

That is worth saying because it redirects the question usefully. What separates two Pembina Valley quotes is the roof — orientation, pitch, what shades it in October — and the household consumption the system is sized against. Not the postcode.

It also means that if two installers give you materially different production estimates for the same house, one of them is wrong. There is no regional variation to hide behind at this scale, and it is a fair question to put to both.

The wider Manitoba position applies equally to both towns: excellent sunshine, the lowest electricity rate in Canada, and a net billing arrangement that pays less for exports than for self-consumption. That combination produces long paybacks across the province regardless of which side of the valley you are on.

Manitoba Hydro runs net billing rather than one-for-one net metering, and it is the fact that should shape a Morden system.

Generation you use in the same moment you produce it displaces electricity you would have bought at about 9.97 cents per kilowatt-hour. Generation you export is bought from you at 7.173 cents, effective 1 April 2026. That is roughly 2.8 cents less on every exported unit — about 28 per cent of its value.

Ontario and Nova Scotia credit exports at the full retail rate, so their customers can treat the grid as a neutral store and size fairly freely. Manitoba customers cannot, and two consequences follow.

Size to your consumption, not your roof. Take twelve months of bills, total the kilowatt-hours, and work back from Morden’s 1,285 kWh per kW to the capacity that covers them. Anything beyond that is being sold at a discount for twenty-five years.

And move what load you can into daylight. Laundry, dishwashing, car charging and timed block heaters all convert export-priced generation into self-consumed generation at no cost whatsoever. In a one-for-one province this scheduling barely matters; here it is worth about 28 per cent on every kilowatt-hour you shift.

When an installer presents a savings figure, ask what self-consumption share it assumed. In Manitoba that single assumption moves the answer more than panel choice does.
