Ontario HRSP - Up to $10,000 for Solar + Battery
Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP), launched January 2025, offers:

- HRSP maximums are per category rather than one shared pot: up to $10,000 for solar and storage, up to $12,000 for heat pumps, up to $7,700 for insulation
Important – HRSP vs. Net Metering: Solar installed under HRSP must be sized for on-site load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. If you prefer net metering (earning 1:1 credits for excess solar), you would not apply through HRSP. Your Xolar advisor can help determine which option provides the best return.

Half an Hour From Niagara Falls, and Measurably Less Sun
St. Catharines and Niagara Falls are about thirty kilometres apart, and the modelled solar resource differs by thirty kWh per kW a year: 1,150 here against 1,180 there. That is roughly 2.5 per cent, and it is the kind of difference that gets lost in conversation but not in a twenty-five year production estimate.
Across the province the picture is middling rather than poor. St. Catharines ranks 20th of the 35 Ontario cities on this site, level with Guelph, Richmond Hill, Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Vaughan at 1,150, ahead of Oshawa at 1,140 and Barrie at 1,130, and behind the southwestern group led by Chatham-Kent at 1,210. Payback runs 9 to 12 years on an average 10 kW system saving around $2,080 a year.
Why the gap with Niagara Falls, so close by? Lake effect. Both cities sit between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, but St. Catharines sits closer to Lake Ontario and under the Niagara Escarpment, and the same moderating cloud that gives the area its mild winters and its fruit belt costs a little summer irradiance. It is the reason the page describes the climate here as moderate with mild winters due to lake effect. The trade-off is real in both directions: less sun, but also less snow load and fewer deep-cold days than a system in Sudbury or Thunder Bay has to survive.
None of this changes what you should do. A 2.5 per cent difference in irradiance is smaller than the difference between a south-facing roof and a south-west-facing one, and far smaller than the difference between a shaded roof and a clear one. Orientation and shading are worth more attention than your postcode.
The Systems We Build Here Run Large
Our St. Catharines installs are few, and they run large — noticeably larger on average than what we have built in Niagara Falls or Oshawa. The sizes themselves are listed on this page.
It is a small sample and we would not draw a strong conclusion from it. But it is consistent with what the housing stock here looks like: larger detached homes in Grantham, Martindale and Port Dalhousie, on lots with room for a full south-facing roof plane, and the kind of electricity bills that go with them.
It is worth setting against the 10 kW figure this page quotes as a typical system size. Both are true. Ten kilowatts is a reasonable planning assumption for a first conversation; what we have actually built in St. Catharines has been larger, because the houses that have come to us have been larger. More than one of the systems here sits well above the 12 kW micro-generation threshold, which means a different and slower connection process with the utility.
That threshold is the practical thing to know if you are planning a big system here. St. Catharines is served by Alectra Utilities, and a system of 12 kW or less follows the simplified micro-embedded generation route. Above it you are into the embedded generation process, which takes longer and involves more engineering review. If your roof and your bill would justify 14 kW, it is worth asking your installer early what the extra kilowatts cost you in time as well as money.
