Ontario HRSP - Up to $10,000 for Solar + Battery
Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP), launched January 2025, offers:
- Up to $5,000 for solar panels ($1,000/kW)
- Battery storage at $300/kWh up to $5,000 (requires approximately 13.3 kWh to reach the cap)
- HRSP maximums are per category rather than one shared pot: up to $10,000 for solar and storage, up to $12,000 for heat pumps, up to $7,700 for insulation
Important – HRSP vs. Net Metering: Solar installed under HRSP must be sized for on-site load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. If you prefer net metering (earning 1:1 credits for excess solar), you would not apply through HRSP. Your Xolar advisor can help determine which option provides the best return.

Half of Vaughan's Systems Cross Ontario's 12 kW Line
Ontario treats 12 kW or less as micro-embedded generation and runs it through a shorter connection process — a ceiling the Ontario Energy Board raised from 10 kW on 1 May 2026. Cross that line and the project follows the standard embedded generation route instead. Alectra applies it here, as every Ontario utility does. In Vaughan that is not a theoretical concern: of the systems Xolar has installed across Woodbridge, Thornhill and North York, two are over the threshold — 12.15 kW and 12.87 kW — and two sit under it at 6 kW and 10.625 kW. Larger homes in Kleinburg and Woodbridge are exactly where a design lands near the line, and a 12.87 kW array is a different application from a 11.9 kW one. It is a question worth settling at design time rather than after you have signed.
Vaughan's Saving Is Driven by the Size of the Bill, Not the Strength of the Sun
Vaughan is modelled at 1,150 kWh per kW a year. That is respectable rather than remarkable — mid-table for Ontario, level with Guelph, Richmond Hill, Whitby, Pickering and St. Catharines, and below the southwestern group led by Chatham-Kent at 1,210.
Yet the average saving quoted here is $2,300 a year, higher than Hamilton’s $2,100 and Brantford’s $2,100, both of which get better sun at 1,160. The explanation is not meteorological. It is that Vaughan households consume more electricity, so the systems built here are larger — the page assumes 10 kW as typical, against 9 kW for Hamilton and Brantford — and a larger system displaces more.
This is the single most useful thing to understand before reading a quote. Two figures get quoted at you: how much sun your city gets, and how much you will save. The first is a property of the place and you cannot change it. The second is mostly a property of your household, and it is why a neighbour’s saving is a poor guide to your own. A large Kleinburg house with a pool pump and two electric cars and a Thornhill townhouse on the same street grid will get very different answers from the same installer.
Payback here runs 9 to 11 years, slightly shorter than Hamilton or Brantford despite the weaker sun, for exactly the same reason — a larger system offsetting a larger bill.
