Federal Tax Credits for Commercial Solar in Canada
Clean Technology ITC (CT ITC)
Canadian businesses installing solar panels can claim a 30% refundable federal tax credit on eligible equipment costs through the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit. This applies to solar photovoltaic systems, inverters, and racking purchased and installed before December 31, 2033.
Unlike a deduction, a refundable credit directly reduces taxes owed - and if the credit exceeds your tax liability, the difference is paid to you.
CCA Class 43.1 / 43.2
Commercial solar equipment qualifies for accelerated Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) under Class 43.1 (30% declining balance) or Class 43.2 (50% declining balance). Combined with the first-year enhanced deduction rules, businesses can write off a significant portion of the system cost in Year 1.
The CCA deduction works alongside the CT ITC - the depreciable base is reduced by half the tax credit amount, and remaining costs are depreciated normally.
