Maritime Electric's Rate Falls as You Use More — Which Changes What Solar Saves

Most provinces charge you more per kilowatt-hour as you use more. Prince Edward Island does the opposite, and it has a direct consequence for solar that almost nobody mentions.

Maritime Electric charges 14.37 cents per kilowatt-hour for the first 2,000 kWh in a billing period and 11.42 cents for everything above that, effective 1 March 2025. It is a declining block: the more you consume, the cheaper the marginal kilowatt-hour becomes.

Now think about what solar does. It reduces the total you draw from the grid, which means it removes kilowatt-hours from the top of your consumption first — and on PEI the top is the cheap tier. A Charlottetown household that regularly exceeds 2,000 kWh in a month is therefore displacing power at 11.42 cents to begin with, not at 14.37. Only once generation has pulled the household below the 2,000 kWh threshold does it start displacing the more expensive first block.

This is the mirror image of British Columbia, where the second tier is dearer and solar displaces the expensive power first. It means a savings estimate built on Charlottetown’s headline 14.37-cent rate will overstate the return for a high-consumption home, and it is a fair question to put to any installer: which rate did you assume, and for how many of the kilowatt-hours?
