New Coquitlam systems take Rate Schedule 2289, under which BC Hydro buys excess generation at 10 cents per kWh and pays each billing cycle rather than once a year. Declining the solar rebate does not keep you on the old rate — it is closed either way — so take the rebate. Customers who took the solar rebate moved to RS 2289 on 1 July 2026. If you accepted only the battery rebate, your service rate is unaffected. BC Hydro does not allow a pro–rated or combined arrangement across the two rates.

BC Hydro bills in two steps – 11.87 cents per kWh for the first 675 kWh a month, then 14.08 cents above it – with increases of 3.75% in both 2025 and 2026. That structure is what makes Coquitlam work despite modest production: the larger Westwood Plateau and Burke Mountain homes on electric heat sit in Step 2 for much of the year, and solar offsets those expensive kilowatt–hours first.

Solar in Coquitlam: An Honest Assessment

Coquitlam produces about 980 kWh per kW of panel per year. That is 17th of the 19 British Columbia cities we serve – well behind Penticton’s 1,270 and below Vancouver’s 1,010. The cause is geography rather than anything fixable: Coquitlam sits against the mountain slopes at the head of the Fraser Valley, which lifts and wrings out incoming Pacific weather, so it collects noticeably more cloud and rain than the cities further out on the delta.

So why does solar still work here? Because what matters is not how much you generate but what the generation displaces. BC Hydro charges a two-step residential rate – 11.87 cents per kWh for the first 675 kWh a month, 14.08 cents for everything above it. Solar offsets your most expensive kilowatt-hours first. A large Westwood Plateau or Burke Mountain house running electric heat sits deep in Step 2 for much of the year, so each generated kWh is worth the higher rate rather than the average one. That is why a 7 kW Coquitlam system still returns around $1,790 a year on an 11 to 14 year payback, despite the production ranking.

The BC Hydro Rebate Decision in Coquitlam

This is the choice that matters most for a Coquitlam quote in 2026, and it is not obvious.

BC Hydro closed 1:1 net metering (Rate Schedule 1289) to new customers on 1 July 2026 and moved new applicants to a fixed export rate of about 10 cents per kWh (RS 2289), approved by the BC Utilities Commission on 24 March 2026. The rate is closed to new customers outright, so there is no longer a decision to make about it: declining BC Hydro’s solar rebate does not preserve 1:1 credits, and you would simply be giving up the rebate for nothing. Take it. BC Hydro’s own position is that the rebate is expected to fully offset the rate change for an average residential customer, and it now pays for exports every billing cycle rather than once a year.

What the change does affect is how much a Coquitlam system is worth, and here the local profile is unusually forgiving. Exported power now earns about 10 cents while you buy electricity back at more, so every kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth more than one you sell. Lower production and larger, heat-heavy homes mean a Coquitlam system already self-consumes a high share of what it makes and exports relatively little — so comparatively little of its output is exposed to the lower export price. A high-production, low-consumption home on the same rate loses more. It also means the sizing question has changed: matching the array to your own consumption now beats filling the roof, and we model that against twelve months of your actual usage.

Burke Mountain, Westwood Plateau and the Shading Problem

Coquitlam’s two big residential areas present almost opposite solar problems.

Westwood Plateau was built out through the 1990s and finished around 2006, and it was developed into standing forest. Mature conifers on and around the lots are the single most common reason a Coquitlam roof underperforms its estimate – and unlike a rainy climate, shading is not evenly distributed. It moves across the roof through the day and shifts seasonally as the sun angle drops. A string inverter loses disproportionately here, because shade across one panel drags down everything on that string. We survey for it before quoting and specify module-level electronics where the canopy warrants it.

Burke Mountain is the opposite case. It is Coquitlam’s current development frontier, so the housing is new: simple roof planes, modern trusses, current electrical service, and no mature tree canopy yet. These are among the easiest and cheapest roofs to work with anywhere in the Lower Mainland, and worth doing before the surrounding planting matures.

Coquitlam Solar Savings Estimate

A typical Coquitlam installation is around 7 kW. At roughly 980 kWh per kW, that produces about 6,900 kWh a year – enough to cover most of a mid-sized household’s consumption without generating a large surplus for export.

The annual saving works out at about $1,790, and the payback lands between 11 and 14 years. Both figures assume the generation displaces Step 2 electricity at 14.08 cents rather than the Step 1 rate, which is the realistic case for a larger Coquitlam home on electric heat. BC Hydro has raised rates 3.75% in each of the last two years, so the annual saving grows over the life of the system while the cost is fixed at the day you install. Panels carry a 25-year warranty, so the years after payback are the return.

It is a small difference in annual terms and it does not change whether solar makes sense; it changes the array size needed to cover the same consumption by roughly one panel in thirty.

Will trees on my Westwood Plateau lot stop solar from working?

Usually not, but they change the design and they need surveying rather than guessing.

Westwood Plateau was developed into mature forest, so many lots keep significant conifer cover.

Shade does not reduce output evenly – it tracks across the roof through the day and worsens in winter as the sun sits lower.

The practical answer is module-level electronics, so a shaded panel only costs you that panel instead of dragging down an entire string.

What size solar system do Coquitlam homes usually need?

About 7 kW is typical here.
