Selkirk is modelled at 1,275 kWh per kW a year. That beats every city we serve in Ontario, where the best is Chatham-Kent at 1,210, and everywhere in Atlantic Canada, where Truro leads at 1,150. On production alone Selkirk is in the top quarter of the country.

The payback here is 15 to 22 years — the longest band on this site, shared with the rest of Manitoba.

The reason is the rate. Manitoba Hydro charges about 9.97 cents per kilowatt-hour, the lowest residential rate in Canada. Since a solar system’s value is the electricity you stop buying, cheap power means each kilowatt-hour you generate is worth comparatively little. The same panel in Nova Scotia displaces electricity priced at 19.128 cents — nearly double.

And Manitoba’s export arrangement compounds it. This is net billing rather than one-for-one net metering: exported generation is bought at 7.173 cents, effective 1 April 2026, not at the retail rate. So the portion of your production you do not consume yourself is worth less again.

None of this makes solar pointless in Selkirk. It makes it a long-horizon decision rather than a quick financial win, and it makes self-consumption unusually important. What it should do is set your expectations before you read a quote — and make you sceptical of any projection promising a payback in single-digit years here.

Generation you consume as you produce it displaces electricity you would have bought at about 9.97 cents per kilowatt-hour. Generation you export is bought from you at 7.173 cents, effective 1 April 2026 — roughly 2.8 cents less, or about 28 per cent of its value.

So every kilowatt-hour you can shift from export to self-consumption is worth about 28 per cent more, and much of that shifting costs nothing at all. Running the dishwasher and laundry in the afternoon rather than the evening. Charging a car during the day where a work pattern allows it. Putting timers on block heaters and pool pumps so they draw when the array is producing.

Sizing follows the same logic. A system built past your own consumption sells the excess at the export rate for its entire life, so twelve months of your own bills is the right starting point rather than the roof area.

Battery storage is the paid version of load shifting, and in Manitoba the case is thinner than elsewhere — you are capturing a 2.8-cent spread, against more than four cents in British Columbia. That does not rule it out, but it does mean the arithmetic needs doing rather than assuming.
