Solar panels in Barrie, Ontario

Solar on the edge of the Georgian Bay snowbelt — sized for Barrie roofs and Barrie winters.

Barrie sits at the south end of the Georgian Bay snowbelt, which is the first thing most homeowners here ask about. A well–pitched array sheds snow on its own, and the 1,130 kWh per kW a Barrie system produces in a year is an annual figure — the winter months are already in it. Xolar has systems running across this corridor, from Barrie and Angus out to Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Owen Sound.

Barrie energy & net metering

What Alectra Utilities charges here, and how surplus solar is credited in Ontario.

UTILITY & RATE
Alectra Utilities
9.8¢-20.3¢/kWh (TOU, OEB RPP)
SOLAR POTENTIAL
Good – 1,130 kWh/kW annually
NET METERING
Alectra Utilities offers 1:1 net metering – excess solar earns credits at the full retail rate. With Time–of–Use billing, on–peak credits at 20.3¢/kWh are more than double the off–peak rate. Credits roll over for 12 months. As of May 1, 2026, the simplified micro–embedded generation connection threshold was raised to 12 kW for residential customers (net metering itself remains available for systems up to 500 kW). Ontario's HRSP offers up to $10,000 for solar + battery installations, but solar under HRSP must be sized for load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. Customers must choose one or the other.

Ontario’s Time–of–Use electricity rates range from 9.8¢/kWh (off–peak) to 20.3¢/kWh (on–peak), with mid–peak at 15.7¢/kWh (OEB RPP, Nov 2025–Oct 2026). Barrie electricity is distributed by Alectra Utilities. Solar panels generate most during daytime on–peak hours, earning you credits at the highest rate. The Ontario Electricity Rebate provides a 23.5% discount on your bill.

What a kilowatt-hour costs at each tier, and the hours each one applies — OEB Regulated Price Plan, Nov 2025 – Oct 2026. Rates are set province-wide by the Ontario Energy Board, so they are the same whichever utility bills you; only delivery charges differ.

Alectra Utilities peak hours, by season

The tiers hold all year; the hours switch twice a year. Weekends and statutory holidays bill at the off-peak rate all day, in both seasons.

SummerMay 1 – Oct 31 · weekdays
On-peak11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Mid-peak7 – 11 a.m. and 5 – 7 p.m.
Off-peak7 p.m. – 7 a.m.
WinterNov 1 – Apr 30 · weekdays
On-peak7 – 11 a.m. and 5 – 7 p.m.
Mid-peak11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Off-peak7 p.m. – 7 a.m.

On-peak power costs 2.1× what the same kilowatt-hour costs off-peak. At the Ontario Energy Board's benchmark of 700 kWh a month, that is the difference between $68.60 and $142.10 on the electricity line alone — delivery and regulatory charges are billed separately, and the Ontario Electricity Rebate then takes 23.5% off the total.

This is why solar pays better here than a flat rate would suggest. A rooftop array produces most between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. — precisely the summer on-peak window — so the power it offsets is the most expensive power Barrie buys.

How your system works behind the meter

Most of a Barrie system's value comes from power used behind the meter — electricity your panels make and your home uses on the spot, offsetting energy you'd otherwise buy at 9.8¢/kWh. Only the surplus flows past the meter to Alectra Utilities for net-metering credit.

Solar Panels in Barrie, Ontario

Barrie, gateway to cottage country, produces 1,130 kWh per kW annually. Alectra Utilities distributes electricity. Slightly lower production than southern GTA but still solid for solar investment.

Ontario’s net metering program credits excess solar at the full retail rate. HRSP ($10K for solar + battery) or net metering available – but not both.

Ontario HRSP - Up to $10,000 for Solar + Battery

Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP), launched January 2025, offers:

  • Up to $5,000 for solar panels ($1,000/kW)
  • Battery storage at $300/kWh up to $5,000
  • Maximum total program rebate: $12,000 (across all eligible upgrades)

Important – HRSP vs. Net Metering: Solar installed under HRSP must be sized for on-site load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. If you prefer net metering (earning 1:1 credits for excess solar), you would not apply through HRSP. Your Xolar advisor can help determine which option provides the best return.

Note: The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan programs are now closed.

What Barrie's Snowbelt Winters Actually Do to Solar Output

Barrie is the question every snowbelt homeowner asks: what happens to the panels in February? Barrie averages 223 cm of snow a year at the Barrie Water Pollution Control Centre station (Environment and Climate Change Canada, 1981-2010 normals), and there is at least a centimetre on the ground for roughly a third of the year. The honest answer is that winter costs you production and the annual maths already knows it. The 1,130 kWh per kW a Barrie system is modelled to produce is a full-year number, measured across the snowy months as well as the bright ones — it is not a summer figure with winter quietly left out. Panels mounted at a normal roof pitch shed snow as the surface warms, so accumulation is usually a matter of days rather than the season, and the low winter sun that follows a clearing is reflected off the snow onto the array. What matters for a Barrie payback is the annual total, and at 1,130 kWh/kW this is a stronger solar city than its reputation for snow suggests. We would rather set that expectation before you buy than have you discover a January bill and think the system is broken.

Barrie solar questions

Is solar worth it in Barrie?

Yes. 1,130 kWh/kW is slightly lower than southern Ontario but still solid.

HRSP ($10K for solar + battery) or net metering makes the economics work with 9-13 year payback.

What solar rebates are available in Barrie?

Ontario’s HRSP provides up to $5,000 for solar + battery storage at $300/kWh up to $5,000 ($12,000 combined program cap).

Important: HRSP solar cannot use net metering – customers must choose one or the other.

The federal Greener Homes programs are now closed.

Who provides electricity in Barrie?

Alectra Utilities distributes electricity in Barrie.

Ontario’s Time-of-Use rates: 9.8¢ off-peak, 15.7¢ mid-peak, 20.3¢ on-peak.

The Ontario Electricity Rebate provides a 23.5% discount.

How does net metering work in Barrie?

Alectra Utilities offers 1:1 net metering – excess solar earns credits at the full retail rate.

Credits roll over for 12 months.

As of May 1, 2026, the net metering system size threshold was raised to 12 kW for residential customers.

Note: Solar under HRSP cannot use net metering.

Do solar panels still work through a Barrie winter?

Yes, with less output — and the annual figure already accounts for it.

Barrie gets about 223 cm of snow a year (Environment and Climate Change Canada 1981-2010 normals), and a Barrie system is still modelled at 1,130 kWh per kW per year, which is a twelve-month number that includes those months.

Panels at a normal roof pitch shed snow on their own as the surface warms, so a covered array is usually a short interruption rather than a write-off for the season.

What size solar system do Barrie homes usually need?

Across the systems Xolar has installed in the Barrie corridor the middle of the range is about 10.4 kW, with real jobs running from 6.3 kW to 19.5 kW.

Where yours lands depends on your roof and your actual consumption, not on a city average.

One thing worth knowing before you plan: Ontario treats micro-embedded generation as 12 kW or less — the Ontario Energy Board raised that ceiling from 10 kW on 1 May 2026 — and anything larger follows the standard embedded generation process.

It reaches you through Alectra here, but it is a provincial rule, not an Alectra one.
