Edmonton energy & net metering

What EPCOR charges here, and how surplus solar is credited in Alberta.

UTILITY & RATE
EPCOR
$0.1201/kWh (EPCOR Rate of Last Resort)
SOLAR POTENTIAL
Excellent – 1,280 kWh/kW annually

Alberta’s Rate of Last Resort is 12.01–12.06¢/kWh, fixed through December 2026. With rates expected to rise after the current period ends, going solar locks in your energy costs permanently.

How your system works behind the meter

Most of a Edmonton system's value comes from power used behind the meter — electricity your panels make and your home uses on the spot, offsetting energy you'd otherwise buy at 12¢/kWh. Only the surplus flows past the meter to EPCOR for net-metering credit.

Edmonton: Alberta's Fastest-Growing Solar Market

Edmonton produces 1,248 kWh per kW annually – more than enough to offset the average household’s consumption. As Alberta’s capital, Edmonton benefits from excellent infrastructure and the province’s well-established micro-generation program.

EPCOR provides electricity at the Rate of Last Resort of 12.01¢/kWh, fixed through December 2026. Edmonton homeowners enjoy the same retail-rate net billing credits as all Albertans – no interconnection fees and free bidirectional meter installation.

As an experienced Alberta solar company, Xolar delivers complete solar solutions for Edmonton homeowners – from initial system design through professional installation and long-term monitoring.

Alberta's Micro-Generation Advantage

Alberta has the best net billing program in Canada. Under the Micro-Generation Regulation:

  • Credits at the full retail electricity rate – you earn the same rate you pay
  • No interconnection fees – your utility installs the bidirectional meter at no charge
  • Systems up to 5 MW allowed
  • Credits applied monthly, unused credits paid out annually

This makes Edmonton one of the best cities in Canada for residential solar – every kilowatt-hour your panels produce offsets a kilowatt-hour you’d otherwise buy at full price.

Edmonton Solar Financing

Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

Finance solar through your property tax bill – zero upfront cost. CEIP is available to Edmonton homeowners and spreads installation costs across manageable payments over 10-20 years.

Federal OHPA

Closed to new applicants as of July 31, 2026. It offered up to $10,000 for heat pumps – pair with solar for maximum energy savings. The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan programs are now closed.

Edmonton Residential Solar Rebate

There is no active residential solar rebate in Edmonton. The previous single-family program ended in 2023, and the current Change Homes for Climate program covers multi-unit buildings only and is fully subscribed. CEIP property-tax financing remains available for eligible homeowners.

EPCOR Micro-Generation and Net Billing

Under Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation, EPCOR customers earn bill credits for excess solar power exported to the grid at the full retail rate. Your system generates electricity during the day, and any surplus reduces your electricity bill automatically.

Edmonton Solar Savings Estimate

A 10 kW system at $28,000-$32,000 pays for itself in 11-14 years. With CEIP, there’s no upfront cost – you pay through your property tax while saving on electricity immediately.

Edmonton’s wide lot spacing and relatively flat terrain typically mean less shading from neighbouring structures, maximizing your solar production. A south-facing roof with minimal shading produces the best results.
