The 23.5% Rebate on Your Bill Quietly Lengthens Your Payback
There is a discount on every eligible Ontario electricity bill that almost no solar quote accounts for, and it works against the case for solar rather than for it.
The Ontario Electricity Rebate takes 23.5% off the subtotal of an eligible residential bill, a rate in force since 1 November 2025. That is straightforwardly good news for a household. It is also the most commonly overlooked figure in a payback calculation, because it discounts precisely the thing solar competes against.
If the electricity you would otherwise buy has already been reduced by nearly a quarter, then each kilowatt-hour you generate is worth nearly a quarter less than the raw Time-of-Use rate suggests. A savings estimate built on 20.3 cents of on-peak generation, with no rebate applied, will overstate the return.
This is not an argument against solar in Kitchener. The page quotes a payback of 9 to 12 years and an average saving of about $2,050 on 1,155 kWh per kW, and those are sound figures for a 9 kW system. It is an argument for reading a quote carefully.
Two questions are worth putting to any installer. Was the Ontario Electricity Rebate applied before the savings were calculated? And did the estimate assume every generated kilowatt-hour displaces an on-peak one at 20.3 cents, which no real household achieves — most consumption sits across off-peak at 9.8 and mid-peak at 15.7 as well.
If the answer to either is unsatisfactory, the projected saving is probably too high.
Same Resource as Waterloo and Cambridge, So the Roof Is the Whole Story
Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge carry identical figures on this site — 1,155 kWh per kW a year, a 9 kW typical system, about $2,050 a year saved, a payback of 9 to 12 years. Three adjacent cities on the same ground genuinely do have the same solar resource.
That has a useful consequence. If you are comparing quotes for a Kitchener address against one a friend received in Waterloo or Cambridge, the regional figure explains none of the difference. Everything separating those two estimates comes from the two roofs and the two households.
What that means in practice is that the roof assessment is the part of a quote worth reading closely. Orientation matters most: a due-south plane substantially outperforms a west-facing one, and the gap between them is larger than the gap between Kitchener and Chatham-Kent, the sunniest city in the province. Pitch matters. So does what overshadows the roof in October, when the sun sits low — a shading assessment done from a summer satellite image can flatter a roof considerably.
And how much of the array sits on the best plane matters. It is often better to put fewer panels on one good aspect than to split the system across three to raise the headline kilowatt figure.
