Yorkton benefits from Saskatchewan’s exceptional solar irradiance at 1,330 kWh/kW – among the highest in Canada. SaskPower provides electricity with net metering credits at 7.5¢/kWh. While payback is longer than provinces with retail-rate credits (13-17 years), rising SaskPower rates (3.9% increase in 2026) improve the long-term economics.

The current net metering program has been extended to March 31, 2029. Terms after 2029 have not been announced.

SaskPower’s net metering programme allows a generator of up to 100 kW. For context, a typical house here needs somewhere near a tenth of that, so the published ceiling is almost never the constraint — which makes it a poor place to start a conversation about size. SaskPower’s own guidance points somewhere more useful: track your monthly power use, work from that, and think about how your consumption might change, because a system built beyond your needs simply produces credits you have less use for. In Yorkton that advice lands differently than it would further west in the province. At 1,330 kWh per kW the resource is strong but not the strongest in Saskatchewan — Estevan reaches 1,400 and Swift Current 1,380 — so a Parkland system needs slightly more capacity than a southern one to cover the same annual consumption. The saving grace is that Saskatchewan does not punish a surplus the way most provinces now do: for anyone who joined after November 2019, SaskPower credits do not expire, so a summer overshoot waits for you rather than lapsing. What it will not do is offset the $31.16 monthly basic charge, which stays on the bill whatever the array produces.

SaskPower quotes an energy charge of 15.476 cents per kilowatt-hour, effective 1 February 2026. That is the number people compare against other provinces, and on its own it is misleading.

The bill also carries a basic charge of $31.16 a month, payable whatever you consume. Spread across a household’s annual consumption, that fixed charge lifts the effective cost of each kilowatt-hour well above the quoted energy rate — this page puts the blended all-in figure at approximately 18 cents, depending on usage. The lower your consumption, the more the fixed charge dominates and the higher your true per-kilowatt-hour cost becomes.

For a solar decision this cuts both ways, and it is worth being precise about which. The blended rate is the honest measure of what you are paying for electricity, so it is the right number for judging whether your bill is high. It is not the right number for valuing solar production, because a system only displaces the energy portion. Generating a kilowatt-hour saves you the 15.476-cent energy charge, not the 18-cent blended figure — the basic charge stays exactly where it is.

Any quote that values your production at a blended rate is therefore overstating the saving, and it is a common enough mistake to be worth asking about directly. On Yorkton’s 1,330 kWh per kW a year the system will produce well; the average saving quoted here, about $2,350, reflects the energy charge rather than the blended one. Payback runs 13 to 17 years.
