Corner Brook is one of the best regions in Newfoundland for solar generation at 950 kWh/kW annually – the highest production in the province. While NL overall has the lowest production in Canada, Corner Brook’s western location provides better solar access.

Newfoundland Power’s rate has risen to 15.213¢/kWh after two consecutive ~7% increases, with a further 2.25% increase in effect as of July 1, 2026. At 950 kWh per kW a year Corner Brook has the strongest solar resource in Newfoundland, level with St. John’s — modest against the prairies, but the best this province offers. What shapes a design here is not the resource, though; it is the rule. Newfoundland’s net metering framework caps generating equipment at the lower of 100 kW or the capacity needed to meet your own power needs, and on a house the second figure always decides it. The published estimate divides your annual kilowatt-hours by 8,760 hours and applies a utilization factor for the equipment, which puts a 10,000 kWh household near 7.6 kW. That combination is worth being plain about. A lower yield means more panels per kilowatt-hour than a homeowner in southern Ontario needs, while the rule stops you compensating by simply building bigger. It is why a Newfoundland payback is measured in more years than a Windsor one, and why we would rather set that expectation before a quote than after it.

Newfoundland Power charges 15.213 cents per kilowatt-hour, effective 1 July 2025. A further increase of 2.25% takes effect on 1 July 2026, bringing it to roughly 15.55 cents, and NL Hydro’s rate-mitigation plan caps further annual increases at 2.25%. The two increases before that were around 7% each.

This matters for a solar decision in a way that is easy to miss. A payback calculation is a comparison between what a system costs today and what electricity will cost over the twenty-five years it operates. If you run that comparison against today’s rate and rates then rise, the system pays back sooner than the calculation said. The payback of 14 to 18 years quoted on this page is computed against current prices, so it is a conservative figure rather than an optimistic one.

It is worth being careful about how far to push this. The mitigation plan’s 2.25% cap is precisely a commitment to keep increases modest, so the era of 7% jumps is intended to be over. A 2.25% annual rise compounds to a little over 25% across a decade — real, but not transformative, and nothing like enough on its own to turn a long payback into a short one.

Corner Brook’s sun is the best in the province at 950 kWh per kW a year, and the honest summary is that this is a long-horizon investment. It suits a homeowner who intends to stay, values a fixed and predictable electricity cost, and is not expecting the system to pay for itself quickly.
