Saskatchewan - Exceptional Solar Potential
Saskatchewan is one of the sunniest provinces in Canada, with cities like Saskatoon and Regina receiving 2,200-2,400 hours of annual sunshine – comparable to Calgary and far exceeding Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. This exceptional solar resource means Saskatchewan homeowners get more power per panel than most other provinces.
Saskatchewan’s flat terrain and wide-open spaces make both rooftop and ground-mount solar installations practical options. Ground-mount systems can be optimally angled for maximum production without rooftop constraints – a popular choice for rural properties and farms.
Saskatchewan Solar Incentives (2026)
SaskPower Net Metering Program
SaskPower allows residential, farm, and commercial customers to install solar systems up to 100 kW and earn credits for excess energy at a fixed rate of 7.5 cents per kWh. Credits are applied to future electricity bills and do not expire until the account is closed – one of the most favourable credit retention policies in Canada. The current net metering program has been extended to March 31, 2029. Terms after 2029 have not been announced.
Saskatoon Light & Power note: SL&P ended 1:1 net metering for new applicants on November 26, 2025. Customers who applied before that date are grandfathered at the 1:1 retail rate until December 31, 2028. New SL&P customers receive 7.5¢/kWh, matching the SaskPower rate.
Farm Solar Programs
SaskPower offers a Solar or Wind-powered Water Pump Grant covering 50% of the cost above $500 for systems used in livestock watering, up to a maximum grant of $500. Saskatchewan’s agricultural sector is increasingly adopting solar for farm operations, grain drying, and rural energy needs.
Home Renovation Tax Credit
Saskatchewan’s Home Renovation Tax Credit provides 10.5% on eligible renovation expenses above a $1,000 base, with eligible expenses capped at $5,000, for a maximum credit of $420 per household ($525 for seniors). This is separate from the SaskPower net metering program.
SaskPower Rate Context
The current energy charge is 15.476 cents per kWh (effective February 1, 2026), with a basic charge of $31.16/month. When you use your solar system’s electricity directly, you avoid this full cost; when you export excess, you earn 7.5¢/kWh in credits. Maximizing self-consumption is the key to the fastest payback. A further 3.9% rate increase is scheduled for 2027.
Federal Greener Homes Programs – Closed
The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in March 2024, and the Greener Homes Loan closed October 1, 2025. Neither is available to new applicants. SaskPower net metering and the Saskatoon HELP program remain the primary incentives.
Solar Costs in Saskatchewan
A typical residential solar installation costs $2.50 to $3.50 per watt, putting a 6-8 kW system between $15,000 and $28,000 before any incentives. The typical payback period is 10-14 years depending on system size, self-consumption ratio, and energy usage patterns.

Protect Yourself from Rising Electricity Costs
The more you pay for electricity, the more you benefit by going solar.
Electricity rates across Saskatchewan have risen steadily over the past several years, and further increases are expected.
Locking in your energy costs with solar protects your household from future rate hikes.
By generating your own power, you reduce your dependence on the grid and keep more money in your pocket every month.
Net Metering Program
How Net Metering Works in Saskatchewan
Your solar system connects to the grid through your utility's net metering or net billing program. The excess energy you produce earns credits that offset the power you draw from the grid, balancing your usage across day, night, and seasons.
In Saskatchewan, the exact credit rate and rules are set by your local utility. A well-sized system can cover a large share of your electricity costs year-round.
