In Nova Scotia the Right Size Is Your Own Annual Consumption

Nova Scotia Power’s residential program is called the Self-Generating Option, and it accepts a generator or battery up to 27 kW sharing the meter with your home. That ceiling is not the number that should shape your design, though. What matters is the settlement rule underneath it. Surplus kilowatt-hours are banked as you produce them and drawn down against later bills. Then, on your anniversary date, anything still in the bank is applied back against energy you were already billed for earlier in the same calendar year, and turned into a credit equal to what you paid for it — carried onto your first bill of the new year and held there until you use it. Nova Scotia Power’s own worked example: billed for 5,500 kWh across the year with 3,500 kWh banked at year end gives you a 3,500 kWh credit. There is one hard limit, and this is it: generation above your annual consumption is not purchased. A system built past your own yearly usage produces electricity that earns you nothing, which is why an honest Halifax design starts from twelve months of your bills rather than from the size of your roof.

Halifax Will Lend You the Money Through Your Tax Account

Solar City is the municipality’s own financing program, and it is unusual enough to be worth understanding before you compare quotes. Rather than a bank loan, the cost is placed on your property as a Local Improvement Charge, amortized over ten years at a fixed 4.75 per cent, billed separately from your property taxes but collected the same way and carrying the same lien priorities. You can clear the balance in full at any point without penalty. Two conditions decide eligibility. Your residential taxes and any charges invoiced through the tax account have to be paid in full, and the proposed system has to generate at least 70 per cent of what an optimal system would produce at the same site — which makes roof orientation and shading part of the approval, not just part of the economics. The program covers property owners across the Halifax Regional Municipality, so it is not confined to the peninsula.

They are applied backwards, not cancelled.

Nova Scotia Power takes whatever kilowatt-hours remain in your bank at the anniversary date and applies them against energy you were already billed for earlier in the same calendar year, converting them into a bill credit equal to what you paid for that energy.

The credit lands on your first bill of the new year and stays on the account until it is used.

NS Power’s own example: 5,500 kWh billed across the year and 3,500 kWh banked at year end produces a 3,500 kWh credit.

The one thing that does not carry is generation beyond your total annual consumption — that is not purchased.
