Why Fredericton Systems Run Bigger Than Ontario's

New Brunswick and Ontario draw the line in completely different places, and it shows in what gets built. NB Power’s net metering program accepts generation units up to 100 kW of nameplate capacity — a ceiling no house will ever reach. Ontario’s simpler connection route, by contrast, stops at 12 kW, so designs there cluster underneath it. Xolar’s Fredericton-area systems sit where you would expect given that freedom: the middle of the range is a little over 15 kW, well past the point where an Ontario system would have changed connection process, and the largest runs past 30 kW. Nobody in Fredericton is designing around a threshold. What they are designing around is their own consumption, their roof, and the credit year described below. Fredericton produces 1,147 kWh per kW annually, so a system in that range moves a serious amount of a household’s electricity.

The 31 March Reset Is the Real Sizing Constraint in Fredericton

NB Power credits the electricity you export at the retail rate and carries the balance forward month to month — but once a year, on 31 March, it runs a reconciliation and any credits still sitting there are zeroed out with no compensation. NB Power puts the consequence bluntly in its own FAQ: because remaining credits are zeroed on 31 March, it is important to size the generation capacity accordingly. That date is better placed than it first sounds. A Fredericton system does most of its work between spring and early autumn, so you accumulate credit through the bright months and spend it back through the winter, arriving at the end of March close to empty just as production climbs again. The system that suits this arrangement is one matched to your own annual consumption. Build well beyond it and the surplus does not roll into next year — you simply hand it over. It is also worth knowing the credits follow you: move to another NB Power account in the same name and the balance transfers, but move outside NB Power’s territory, or into a different name, and it is zeroed with nothing paid for it.
