Brandon is served by Manitoba Hydro at ~9.97/kWh – the lowest electricity rate in Canada. Solar production of 1,340 kWh/kW is exceptional (higher than Toronto or Vancouver), but Manitoba’s low hydro rates result in payback of 15-22 years.

Brandon is modelled at 1,340 kWh per kW a year — the strongest figure in Manitoba and among the highest in the country, ahead of every city we serve in Ontario, Atlantic Canada and British Columbia, and level with Regina.

And the payback quoted here is 15 to 22 years, the longest band on this entire site.

That combination looks like an error and is not. Two things produce it, and neither is the weather.

The first is that Manitoba Hydro’s rate is about 9.97 cents per kilowatt-hour, the lowest in Canada. The value of a solar system is the electricity you stop buying, so cheap power means each generated kilowatt-hour is worth less. A Brandon panel produces more than a Nova Scotia one and displaces electricity worth roughly half as much — Nova Scotia Power charges 19.128 cents.

The second is how Manitoba handles what you export, and it is the part most people miss. Manitoba Hydro runs a net billing programme rather than one-for-one net metering: excess generation is credited at an export rate of 7.173 cents per kilowatt-hour, effective 1 April 2026, not at the retail rate you pay. So a kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth 9.97 cents, while the same kilowatt-hour exported earns 7.173.

The honest summary is that Manitoba is a superb place to generate electricity and a difficult place to make solar pay quickly. Both halves belong on the page.

The single most useful design fact in Manitoba is that exporting and self-consuming are worth different amounts.

Manitoba Hydro’s programme is net billing. Electricity you generate and use in the same moment displaces power you would have bought at about 9.97 cents per kilowatt-hour. Electricity you export is bought from you at the export rate — 7.173 cents, effective 1 April 2026. The gap is roughly 2.8 cents on every exported kilowatt-hour, or about 28 per cent of the value.

That is not catastrophic, and it is not the one-for-one arrangement Ontario and Nova Scotia customers enjoy. What it means practically is that a Brandon system should be sized against your own consumption rather than against available roof area, because capacity beyond what you use is monetised at a discount for the life of the system.

It also raises the value of two things that cost nothing. Shifting flexible load into daylight — laundry, dishwasher, car charging, block heaters on a timer — converts export-priced generation into self-consumed generation at a stroke. And understanding your own daily pattern is worth more here than in a one-for-one province, where the timing of consumption barely matters.

Battery storage is the paid version of the same idea, and in Manitoba the arithmetic is thinner than elsewhere: you are capturing a 2.8-cent spread rather than the 4-plus cents available in British Columbia. Price it properly before assuming it pays.
