Solar Performance in Hamilton

System Effectiveness

Hamilton is served by Alectra Utilities, with solar production around 1,160 kWh per kW a year. It is one of Ontario’s lower–sun major cities thanks to lake–effect cloud and the escarpment, so honest system sizing matters. Ontario’s HRSP adds up to $10,000 in solar and battery rebates, or you can choose Alectra 1:1 net metering instead. The City’s Better Homes Hamilton program finances heat pumps and envelope upgrades (not solar), which pairs well with an HRSP solar claim for a whole–home upgrade. Payback runs about 9 to 12 years.

Solar Panels in Hamilton, Ontario

Hamilton combines industrial heritage with a growing residential solar market. Alectra Utilities distributes electricity with solar production of 1,160 kWh per kW annually. Ontario’s Time-of-Use pricing maximizes solar value during on-peak hours (20.3¢/kWh).

Ontario’s net metering program credits excess solar at the full retail rate. HRSP ($5K solar + battery at $300/kWh up to $5K) or net metering available – but not both. Hamilton’s mix of older and newer homes means a site assessment is key to optimal panel placement.

Solar Incentives and Financing in Hamilton

Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) offers up to $5,000 for solar ($1,000/kW) plus battery storage at $300/kWh up to $5,000. Solar and battery together can reach $10,000 in HRSP rebates. Solar under HRSP must be sized for load displacement only, so you choose either HRSP or 1:1 net metering, not both.

Alectra Utilities handles Hamilton net metering: residential micro-generation up to 12 kW, with credits carried forward for 12 months.

The City runs Better Homes Hamilton, a property-tax financing program of up to $20,000 for home energy retrofits. Important: it funds heat pumps, insulation and air sealing, not solar or battery storage. A practical Hamilton play is to claim HRSP for your solar and use Better Homes Hamilton to finance a heat pump for a whole-home upgrade. Better Homes Hamilton has run as a pilot, so confirm current intake with the City.

Note: the federal Greener Homes Grant (closed March 2024) and Loan (closed October 2025) are no longer available. As of June 2026.

Net Metering Program

How Net Metering Works in Ontario

Alectra Utilities offers 1:1 net metering – excess solar earns credits at the full retail rate. With Time–of–Use billing, on–peak credits at 20.3¢/kWh are worth more than twice off–peak. Credits roll over for 12 months. As of May 1, 2026, the residential simplified micro–embedded generation connection threshold was raised to 12 kW (net metering itself remains available for systems up to 500 kW). Ontario's HRSP offers solar rebates and battery at $300/kWh up to $5,000, but solar under HRSP must be sized for load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. Customers must choose one or the other.
