Federal Solar Incentives: What's Still Available in 2026
The federal landscape for solar rebates has changed significantly. Here's the current status:
Canada Greener Homes Grant
Closed to new applicants in March 2024. This program provided up to $5,000 for solar panel installations. No replacement federal grant program has been announced.
Canada Greener Homes Loan
Interest-free loans up to $40,000 for energy-efficient upgrades. Closed to new applicants in October 2025. Existing approved loans remain active.
Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA)
Up to $10,000 for switching from oil heating to heat pumps. Available primarily in Atlantic Canada. PEI intake paused due to oversubscription.
Federal + Provincial Stack
With federal grants closed, provincial programs are now the primary source of solar rebates. These can be combined with municipal financing (HELP, PACE) for maximum savings.
By Province
Solar Rebates by Province (2026)
Provincial programs are the primary way Canadian homeowners reduce solar costs. Here's what's available where Xolar operates.
Ontario
HRSP (Home Renovation Savings Program): $1,000/kW up to $5,000 for solar, $5,000 for battery storage. Max program cap $12,000. Note: HRSP solar cannot use net metering. HELP/Better Homes property-tax financing also available in Toronto and Ottawa.
Up to $10,000 in grants + financing
British Columbia
BC Hydro: $1,000/kW up to $5,000 for solar, $5,000 for battery. PST exempt on solar equipment (~7% savings). Accepting the rebate changes your export rate to ~10¢/kWh. Skipping preserves 1:1 net metering for 20 years.
Up to $10,000 + PST exemption
Alberta
CEIP (Clean Energy Improvement Program): Property-tax financing for solar in 23+ municipalities. Zero upfront cost, repaid through property taxes. No direct grant, but eliminates the upfront barrier entirely.
$0-down financing (no grant)
Manitoba
Efficiency Manitoba: $0.50/W installed, max $5,000 per home. MB Hydro also offers loans up to $20,000. Net billing at 4.39¢/kWh (not 1:1 net metering).
Up to $5,000 grant + $20K loan
Saskatchewan
No active provincial solar grant program. SaskPower net metering credits at 7.5¢/kWh (expires March 31, 2026, future terms unannounced). High electricity rates (~18.2¢) still make solar viable without rebates.
No grant, net metering only
Nova Scotia
No active solar grant program. Strong economics through 1:1 net metering at ~18.5¢/kWh, among the highest rates in Canada. PACE Atlantic available in select municipalities for property-tax financing.
No grant, strong net metering
New Brunswick
NB Power THESP: $200/kW up to $3,000 for solar. Rate at 14.76¢/kWh. Saint John Energy operates separately with cash payments for excess generation.
Up to $3,000
Newfoundland & Labrador
No provincial solar rebate program. NL Power rate at 15.213¢/kWh. Net metering available: monthly 1:1 credits, annual surplus at wholesale rate. Honest payback: 14-18 years.
No grant, net metering available
