Steinbach produces 1,270 kWh per kW a year. That is more than any city we serve in Ontario, where Chatham-Kent leads at 1,210, and more than anywhere in Atlantic Canada, where Truro leads at 1,150. On sunshine alone Manitoba is one of the best places in the country to own panels.

The payback quoted here is 15 to 22 years — longer than Newfoundland’s, longer than anywhere else on this site.

The explanation is entirely on the price side, and it has two parts.

Manitoba Hydro charges about 9.97 cents per kilowatt-hour, the lowest residential rate in Canada. Solar’s value is the electricity you avoid buying, so a cheap rate makes each generated kilowatt-hour worth less. Against Nova Scotia’s 19.128 cents, a Steinbach kilowatt-hour is worth roughly half.

And Manitoba runs net billing rather than one-for-one net metering. Exported generation is purchased at 7.173 cents, effective 1 April 2026, not at the retail rate — so whatever share of your production you do not use yourself is discounted again.

We would rather set that out plainly than let a homeowner discover it from a quote. Solar in Steinbach is a long-horizon proposition for someone staying put, who values a fixed electricity cost and is not counting on a fast return. On those terms it works. On the terms most advertising implies, it does not.

Manitoba Hydro’s programme is net billing rather than one-for-one net metering, and that puts a decision in your hands that homeowners in Ontario or Nova Scotia do not really have.

Electricity you generate and use in the same moment displaces power costing about 9.97 cents per kilowatt-hour. Electricity you export is bought from you at 7.173 cents, effective 1 April 2026. The spread is roughly 2.8 cents, about 28 per cent of the value.

So the share of your generation you consume directly — rather than sending to the grid — materially changes what the system is worth. In a one-for-one province that share is close to irrelevant, because exports and imports settle at the same price. In Steinbach it is one of the few variables you can still influence after the panels are on the roof.

The free version is scheduling: laundry, dishwashing, car charging and timed loads moved into daylight hours. The paid version is battery storage, which captures the same spread automatically — though at 2.8 cents the arithmetic is thinner here than in provinces with a wider gap, so it needs pricing rather than assuming.

The design consequence is straightforward. Size against twelve months of your own consumption rather than against roof area, because capacity beyond what you use is sold at the export rate for the life of the system. And ask any installer what self-consumption share their savings figure assumed — in Manitoba, that assumption carries the estimate.
