The Powerwall will absorb energy generated by your solar panels in real-time during daylight hours, significantly increasing its effective runtime capability. When paired with solar, you can maintain power indefinitely during power outages as your Powerwall will continuously recharge itself.
Can a Tesla Powerwall run an air conditioner?
Yes, a Tesla Powerwall can run an air conditioner, but the duration will depend on how much power it consumes and the battery’s charge level. With 5 kW of continuous power in backup, Powerwall 3 can handle most residential AC units. When paired with solar panels, the system can recharge while running your AC during daylight hours.
Is Powerwall suitable for outdoor installation?
Yes, the Tesla Powerwall is designed to be installed indoors or outdoors, with a durable design that withstands various weather conditions. It operates reliably in temperatures from -20°C to 50°C and is rated for outdoor use in Canadian climates. The weather-resistant enclosure protects against rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.  Powerwall is equipped with thermal self-regulation technology to manage it’s own internal temperature.  In colder conditions, Powerwall can pre-heat its battery cells so that charging and discharging remain possible even when ambient temperatures drop well below freezing.
How do I monitor my Powerwall system?
The Tesla app allows you to track energy production, consumption, and storage in real-time, offering complete control over your system. You can monitor your battery charge level, see how much solar energy you’re generating, track your grid usage, and control backup settings all from your smartphone. The app also provides notifications about system status and performance.
How long will Powerwall power my home?
A single Powerwall can power essential loads for 1-2 days depending on usage. Multiple units provide extended backup. When paired with solar, you can maintain power indefinitely during sunny conditions.
Can I add Powerwall to my existing solar system?

Can Powerwall go completely off-grid?
A standard Powerwall installation will not operate if the grid is disconnected.  To operate off-grid, Powerwall must be installed in an off-grid configuration.  While technically possible to go off-grid with enough Powerwall Expansion units and solar panels, we recommend staying grid-connected for maximum reliability and to take advantage of net metering credits.

What Is the Tesla Powerwall and How Does It Work with Solar?

The Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to store energy for
residential use. When paired with
solar panels, the Powerwall stores excess
solar energy generated during the day so you can use it at night, during peak rate
hours, or when the grid goes down. Without a battery, any solar energy your home
doesn’t use immediately gets exported to the grid. With a Powerwall, you keep that
energy for yourself.

The system works automatically. During daylight hours, your solar panels generate
electricity. Your home uses what it needs first, and the surplus charges your
Powerwall. Once the battery is full, any remaining excess flows to the grid through
net metering. At night or during an outage, the Powerwall
discharges to power your home. The Tesla app gives you real-time visibility into
energy production, consumption, and battery charge level.

Powerwall pricing in Canada depends on your province, installation complexity, and
whether you’re adding it to an existing solar system or installing both together. A
single Powerwall 3 is about $23,997 before tax (~$27,100 with HST) installed. Solar +
Powerwall packages start around $35,000 for a complete system.

Provincial rebates can reduce the net cost significantly. Ontario’s HRSP offers $5,000
specifically for battery storage (on top of $5,000 for solar, capped at $12,000
total). BC Hydro’s program includes $5,000 for batteries. Several other provinces have

The financial return depends on your electricity rate structure. In provinces with
time-of-use pricing (Ontario, parts of BC), the Powerwall pays for itself faster by

Powerwall and Net Metering in Canada

Net metering lets you earn credits for excess solar energy sent to the grid. The
Powerwall adds a strategic layer: instead of exporting all your excess at whatever
your utility pays, you can store it and use it during peak rate hours when electricity
costs the most. In Ontario’s time-of-use system, this means charging your Powerwall at
9.8¢/kWh overnight and avoiding 20.3¢/kWh on-peak rates.

In provinces with true 1:1 net metering (Ontario, BC, Nova Scotia), the Powerwall’s
primary value is backup power and peak-shaving rather than avoiding export. In
provinces with lower export rates like Manitoba (7.17¢/kWh) or Saskatchewan
(7.5¢/kWh), keeping that energy for self-consumption via Powerwall is worth
considerably more than exporting it.

One important note: under Ontario’s HRSP, systems that receive the solar rebate
($5,000) cannot participate in net metering. However, the battery rebate ($5,000) has
