That is worth pausing on, because it says something useful about how much weight a city-level solar figure can bear. These numbers are modelled from regional irradiance data, and at the scale of southern Ontario the genuine variation between towns a hundred kilometres apart is small enough that the modelling rounds several of them to the same value. The whole Ontario range runs from 1,030 in Sault Ste. Marie to 1,210 in Chatham-Kent — about 17 per cent end to end, across the entire province.
Within the GTA the spread is about 2.6 per cent. Which means that for anyone choosing between quotes in Richmond Hill, Vaughan or Markham, the city figure is close to noise.
What is not noise is your roof. Orientation, pitch, the shading from a neighbour’s maple in October, and how much of the array can sit on one good plane rather than being split across three — those produce differences far larger than 2.6 per cent, and they are specific to your address rather than your municipality.
So when an installer quotes an annual production estimate, the question worth asking is not which regional figure they used. It is what they assumed about your roof, and whether anyone actually looked at it across a full year rather than reading it off a satellite image in summer.
