Most Richmond Hill Systems Stay Under Ontario's 12 kW Line, and That Is Worth Keeping

Ontario draws an administrative line at 12 kW. At or under it, a residential project is micro-embedded generation and follows the shorter connection route. Above it, the standard embedded generation process applies, which involves more review and takes longer. The Ontario Energy Board raised that ceiling from 10 kW on 1 May 2026, and it applies through Alectra here exactly as it does through every distributor in the province — it is a provincial rule, not an Alectra policy.

This page assumes a typical Richmond Hill system of 10 kW, which sits comfortably inside the simpler route with room to spare. That is the common case, and for most households it is the right place to be: the paperwork is lighter and the timeline shorter.

Where it becomes a live decision is on larger homes in Bayview Hill, Jefferson or Oak Ridges with the roof area and the consumption to justify 13 or 14 kW. Crossing the line is not a problem and it is not prohibited — it simply changes the process.
