Solar panels in Newmarket, Ontario

Second-lowest sun of the Alectra cities — by about two per cent, which changes nothing.

Newmarket is modelled at 1,145 kWh per kW a year, near the bottom of the twelve Alectra–served cities on this site — only Barrie, at 1,130, is lower. Payback runs 9 to 12 years on a typical 10 kW system saving about $2,200. The gap to the top of that group is about two per cent, which is smaller than what roof orientation does, so it is not a reason to hesitate.

Newmarket energy & net metering

What Alectra Utilities charges here, and how surplus solar is credited in Ontario.

UTILITY & RATE
Alectra Utilities
9.8¢-20.3¢/kWh (TOU, OEB RPP)
SOLAR POTENTIAL
Very Good – 1,145 kWh/kW annually
NET METERING
Alectra Utilities offers 1:1 net metering – excess solar earns credits at the full retail rate. With Time–of–Use billing, on–peak credits at 20.3¢/kWh are worth more than twice off–peak. Credits roll over for 12 months. As of May 1, 2026, the residential simplified micro–embedded generation connection threshold was raised to 12 kW (net metering itself remains available for systems up to 500 kW). Ontario's HRSP offers solar rebates and battery at $300/kWh up to $5,000, but solar under HRSP must be sized for load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. Customers must choose one or the other.

Ontario’s Time–of–Use electricity rates range from 9.8¢/kWh (off–peak) to 20.3¢/kWh (on–peak), with mid–peak at 15.7¢/kWh (OEB RPP, Nov 2025–Oct 2026). Newmarket electricity is distributed by Alectra Utilities. Solar panels generate most during daytime on–peak hours, earning you credits at the highest rate. The Ontario Electricity Rebate provides a 23.5% discount on your bill.

What a kilowatt-hour costs at each tier, and the hours each one applies — OEB Regulated Price Plan, Nov 2025 – Oct 2026. Rates are set province-wide by the Ontario Energy Board, so they are the same whichever utility bills you; only delivery charges differ.

Alectra Utilities peak hours, by season

The tiers hold all year; the hours switch twice a year. Weekends and statutory holidays bill at the off-peak rate all day, in both seasons.

SummerMay 1 – Oct 31 · weekdays
On-peak11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Mid-peak7 – 11 a.m. and 5 – 7 p.m.
Off-peak7 p.m. – 7 a.m.
WinterNov 1 – Apr 30 · weekdays
On-peak7 – 11 a.m. and 5 – 7 p.m.
Mid-peak11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Off-peak7 p.m. – 7 a.m.

On-peak power costs 2.1× what the same kilowatt-hour costs off-peak. At the Ontario Energy Board's benchmark of 700 kWh a month, that is the difference between $68.60 and $142.10 on the electricity line alone — delivery and regulatory charges are billed separately, and the Ontario Electricity Rebate then takes 23.5% off the total.

This is why solar pays better here than a flat rate would suggest. A rooftop array produces most between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. — precisely the summer on-peak window — so the power it offsets is the most expensive power Newmarket buys.

How your system works behind the meter

Most of a Newmarket system's value comes from power used behind the meter — electricity your panels make and your home uses on the spot, offsetting energy you'd otherwise buy at 9.8¢/kWh. Only the surplus flows past the meter to Alectra Utilities for net-metering credit.

Solar Panels in Newmarket, Ontario

Newmarket in York Region produces 1,145 kWh per kW annually. Alectra Utilities distributes electricity. HRSP ($5K solar + battery at $300/kWh up to $5K) or net metering available – but not both.

Ontario’s net metering program credits excess solar at the full retail rate. With Time-of-Use billing, solar earns maximum value during on-peak hours (20.3¢/kWh). Credits carry forward 12 months.

Ontario HRSP - Up to $10,000 for Solar + Battery

Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP), launched January 2025, offers:

  • Up to $5,000 for solar panels ($1,000/kW)
  • Battery storage at $300/kWh up to $5,000 (requires approximately 13.3 kWh to reach the cap)
  • HRSP maximums are per category rather than one shared pot: up to $10,000 for solar and storage, up to $12,000 for heat pumps, up to $7,700 for insulation

Important – HRSP vs. Net Metering: Solar installed under HRSP must be sized for on-site load displacement only – net metering is not permitted under HRSP. If you prefer net metering (earning 1:1 credits for excess solar), you would not apply through HRSP. Your Xolar advisor can help determine which option provides the best return.

Note: The Canada Greener Homes Grant (closed March 2024) and Greener Homes Loan (closed October 2025) are no longer available.

Ontario Credits Carry Forward Twelve Months — Which Is Why Winter Is Covered

A question that comes up in every northern-GTA conversation is what happens in winter, when a rooftop array produces a fraction of its July output while the house is drawing hardest.

The answer in Ontario is net metering, and specifically its carryforward. Alectra credits your excess generation at the full retail rate, and those credits roll forward for twelve months to offset later bills. So the surplus you build through the long days of June and July is not wasted — it sits on the account and is drawn down through the winter. The system is settled across a year rather than month by month.

Two details are worth knowing. First, the credits do expire at the twelve-month mark, which is the practical argument against oversizing: generation beyond your annual consumption is not banked indefinitely, so a system built past your own usage gives that surplus away. Second, Time-of-Use pricing means the credits you earn are worth what the electricity was worth when you exported it, and solar exports mostly during the day, when Ontario charges 20.3 cents on-peak rather than the 9.8-cent off-peak rate.

Together those two facts point at the same design conclusion: size the system to twelve months of your own consumption, not to the roof and not to a summer month. That is the number an installer should be starting from, and if a Newmarket quote was built without twelve months of your bills in hand, it is worth asking what it was based on instead.

Newmarket solar questions

Can I get solar in Newmarket?

Yes. 1,145 kWh/kW production.

Alectra Utilities serves the area.

HRSP ($5K solar + battery at $300/kWh up to $5K) or net metering available.

What solar rebates are available in Newmarket?

Ontario’s HRSP provides up to $5,000 for solar ($1,000/kW) + battery storage at $300/kWh up to $5,000.

Important: HRSP solar cannot use net metering – customers must choose one or the other.

The federal Greener Homes Grant and Loan programs are both closed.

Who provides electricity in Newmarket?

Alectra Utilities distributes electricity in Newmarket.

Ontario’s Time-of-Use rates: 9.8¢ off-peak, 15.7¢ mid-peak, 20.3¢ on-peak (OEB RPP, Nov 2025-Oct 2026).

The Ontario Electricity Rebate provides a 23.5% discount.

How does net metering work in Newmarket?

Alectra Utilities offers 1:1 net metering – excess solar earns credits at the full retail rate.

Credits roll over for 12 months.

As of May 1, 2026, the residential threshold is 12 kW.

Note: Solar under HRSP cannot use net metering.

Does Newmarket get less sun than the rest of the GTA?

Slightly.

Newmarket is modelled at 1,145 kWh per kW a year, second-lowest of the twelve Alectra-served cities on this site — only Barrie at 1,130 is lower — against Mississauga’s 1,170 at the top.

That is a spread of about 3.5 per cent across the whole group.

In practice it is not a meaningful difference: roof orientation and shading move production by considerably more, and Newmarket’s payback of 9 to 12 years and average saving of $2,200 sit in the middle of the Alectra group rather than at the bottom.

Location is not what will decide your result here.

What happens to my Newmarket solar production in winter?

It drops, and net metering is what covers the gap.

Alectra credits your excess generation at the full retail rate, and the credits carry forward for twelve months, so the surplus you build in June and July offsets bills through the winter rather than being lost.

The system settles across a year, not month by month.

The one caveat is that credits do expire at twelve months, so building a system larger than your annual consumption gives the excess away rather than banking it.

That is why sizing should start from twelve months of your own bills rather than from available roof area.
