Newmarket Sits Near the Bottom of the Alectra Group, and It Does Not Matter
Of the twelve cities on this site served by Alectra Utilities, Newmarket is modelled second-lowest for solar resource at 1,145 kWh per kW a year. Only Barrie, at 1,130, is lower. The highest is Mississauga at 1,170.
The whole spread across those twelve cities is therefore about 3.5 per cent. On a 10 kW system that is a difference of a few hundred kilowatt-hours across a year — enough to see in a spreadsheet, not enough to change a decision.
It is worth stating plainly because local solar pages have a habit of claiming every town is exceptional, and the arithmetic does not support it. Newmarket is a slightly-below-average southern Ontario city for sunshine and a perfectly good one for solar. Its average saving of $2,200 a year and payback of 9 to 12 years sit squarely in the middle of the Alectra group, because the modest production difference is offset by ordinary variation in household consumption.
What would actually change your result is closer to home. A south-facing roof plane with clear sightlines will outproduce a west-facing one on the same street by a margin several times the gap between Newmarket and Mississauga. So will a design that puts the whole array on one good plane rather than splitting it to fit more panels on.
If you are comparing a Newmarket quote against one a relative received in the GTA, the difference between the two production estimates should be explained by the roofs, not by the postcodes. If an installer attributes it to location, that is worth questioning.
Ontario Credits Carry Forward Twelve Months — Which Is Why Winter Is Covered
A question that comes up in every northern-GTA conversation is what happens in winter, when a rooftop array produces a fraction of its July output while the house is drawing hardest.
The answer in Ontario is net metering, and specifically its carryforward. Alectra credits your excess generation at the full retail rate, and those credits roll forward for twelve months to offset later bills. So the surplus you build through the long days of June and July is not wasted — it sits on the account and is drawn down through the winter. The system is settled across a year rather than month by month.
Two details are worth knowing. First, the credits do expire at the twelve-month mark, which is the practical argument against oversizing: generation beyond your annual consumption is not banked indefinitely, so a system built past your own usage gives that surplus away. Second, Time-of-Use pricing means the credits you earn are worth what the electricity was worth when you exported it, and solar exports mostly during the day, when Ontario charges 20.3 cents on-peak rather than the 9.8-cent off-peak rate.
Together those two facts point at the same design conclusion: size the system to twelve months of your own consumption, not to the roof and not to a summer month. That is the number an installer should be starting from, and if a Newmarket quote was built without twelve months of your bills in hand, it is worth asking what it was based on instead.
