West Kelowna is a FortisBC customer, not BC Hydro, so the rate structure and the rebate landscape both differ from the coast. FortisBC customers are not eligible for BC Hydro’s solar and battery rebates, which are funded by BC Hydro for its own customers. The provincial PST exemption on solar equipment applies either way. Slope, Aspect and Why West Kelowna Roofs Vary So Much

West Kelowna is a hillside community, and that changes solar design more than most people expect.

Lakeview Heights, Rose Valley, Glenrosa and Smith Creek are built across slopes rather than on flat ground, so roof planes here point in a much wider range of directions than in a grid-planned subdivision. Two neighbours on the same street can have materially different production simply because one roof faces southwest across the lake and the other faces northeast into the hill.

That means a West Kelowna quote should never be generated from a postcode and a roof size. Aspect and pitch have to be read off your actual roof, and where the main plane faces the wrong way, the answer is often a smaller array on the best-facing section rather than filling the whole roof. The upside is real: at 1,230 kWh/kW, a well-oriented West Kelowna roof performs within about 1% of Kelowna’s and roughly 22% ahead of Vancouver.

FortisBC's Kilowatt Hour Bank, and Why West Kelowna Escaped the 2026 Change

West Kelowna is on FortisBC, not BC Hydro, and in 2026 that distinction is worth money.

FortisBC runs its own net metering programme for systems up to 50 kW. Surplus generation is not bought from you per kilowatt-hour – it goes into a Kilowatt Hour Bank and carries forward against later bills, so a sunny July offsets a dark January instead of being cashed out at a low rate. Anything still banked at your annual settlement is paid at the rate FortisBC pays other power producers.

The part that matters this year: BC Hydro closed 1:1 net metering to new customers on 1 July 2026 and moved them to a flat export rate of about 10 cents per kWh. That was a BC Hydro decision affecting BC Hydro customers. It does not apply in West Kelowna. If you have read about BC’s net metering closing and assumed it hit you, it did not.

West Kelowna Solar Savings Estimate

A typical West Kelowna installation is around 8 kW. At about 1,230 kWh per kW that produces roughly 9,800 kWh a year, saving in the region of $2,090 and paying back in 9 to 11 years.

Two things make those numbers hold up better here than the raw production suggests. FortisBC banks surplus as kilowatt-hours rather than buying it at a low export rate, so summer overproduction carries forward to offset winter consumption instead of being cashed out cheaply. And because West Kelowna’s roofs vary so much in aspect, a system properly sized to the best-facing planes often costs less than a larger array spread across compromised ones.

West Kelowna produces about 1,230 kWh per kW against Kelowna’s 1,245 – a difference of roughly 1%, which is well inside the margin of how your particular roof faces.

Both sit in the same Okanagan rain shadow and both are served by FortisBC on the same net metering terms.

The thing that will actually decide your output is slope and aspect, not which side of the lake you are on.

My roof faces the wrong way - is solar still worth it in West Kelowna?

Often yes, because West Kelowna starts from a high base.

At 1,230 kWh/kW a west or east-facing roof here can still out-produce a perfectly south-facing roof on the coast.

A north-facing main plane is the case where we will usually recommend a smaller array on a secondary roof section instead, or tell you it does not pay.

We survey aspect and pitch on site rather than estimating from the address, because on these hillside lots the variation between neighbouring houses is large.

What size system and what savings should I expect in West Kelowna?
