Solar panels in Lethbridge, Alberta

Lethbridge Solar: Canada's Sunniest Tier and Retail-Rate Net Billing

Lethbridge is one of Canada’s premier solar cities, with over 2,500 sunshine hours a year and Chinook winds that clear snow off panels through winter. Output runs about 1,310 kWh per kW or more, among the highest in the country. The City runs its own electric utility, and Alberta’s Micro–Generation Regulation credits your exported solar at the full retail rate with no interconnection fees. The City’s Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) adds a $1,350 solar rebate plus low–interest property–tax financing when intake is open. Payback runs about 8 to 12 years.

NET METERING
Under Alberta's Micro–Generation Regulation, your retailer credits you at the full retail rate for excess solar. No interconnection fees. Systems up to 5 MW. Credits applied monthly, unused credits paid out annually.

The City of Lethbridge runs its own electric utility. The 2026 Rate of Last Resort energy charge is about 9.98¢/kWh, while the all–in delivered cost (energy plus distribution and riders) is closer to 12¢/kWh. Lethbridge is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, with over 2,500 sunshine hours a year. As of June 2026.

How your system works behind the meter

Most of a Lethbridge system's value comes from power used behind the meter — electricity your panels make and your home uses on the spot, offsetting energy you'd otherwise buy at 9.98¢/kWh. Only the surplus flows past the meter to City of Lethbridge Electric for net-metering credit.

Lethbridge: One of Canada's Best Cities for Solar

Lethbridge is one of the sunniest cities in Canada with over 2,500 sunshine hours annually. Solar systems produce 1,310 kWh/kW – among the highest anywhere in the country.

The City of Lethbridge operates its own electric utility. Combined with Alberta’s retail-rate net billing and no interconnection fees, Lethbridge is an outstanding location for solar.

Lethbridge Runs Its Own Electric Utility

Lethbridge is not an ENMAX or an EPCOR city. The City of Lethbridge operates its own electric utility, and that is worth knowing before you compare quotes written for Calgary or Edmonton.

Alberta’s micro-generation framework still applies – exports are credited at the retail rate rather than a wholesale one, which is the province’s structural advantage over most of Canada. But the rate you are actually offsetting is Lethbridge’s, around 9.98 cents per kWh for energy on the Rate of Last Resort and roughly 12 cents all-in once delivery is included. Billing, interconnection and the micro-generation application all go through the City rather than a provincial retailer.

With about 1,310 kWh/kW and over 320 sunny days a year, Lethbridge sits among the strongest solar cities in Canada, and the combination of that production with retail-rate credit gives an 8 to 12 year payback and roughly $2,150 a year in savings.

Lethbridge Solar Incentives and Financing

City of Lethbridge Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

The City of Lethbridge runs a Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) that supports rooftop solar with a $1,350 rebate plus low-interest financing (around 2.83%) repaid through your property tax over terms up to 25 years. The program has been popular and is currently closed or waitlisted pending additional funding, so confirm current intake status with the City before counting on it.

Alberta has no province-wide residential solar rebate, and the federal Greener Homes Grant and Loan are both closed. CEIP and Alberta’s retail-rate net billing are the main supports for Lethbridge homeowners. As of June 2026.

320 Sunny Days and What Chinooks Do for Winter Production

Lethbridge gets over 320 sunny days a year and about 1,310 kWh per kW – among the highest production figures in Canada, and ahead of Calgary’s 1,292.

The chinook is part of why. Warm winter winds off the Rockies clear cloud and strip snow off roofs far more often than in the rest of the prairies, so Lethbridge loses fewer winter days to snow cover than its latitude would suggest. Panels also run more efficiently in cold air than in summer heat, so a clear, cold February day is genuinely productive rather than a write-off.

The trade-off is wind. Lethbridge is one of the windiest cities in Canada, and that affects mounting rather than viability – rail spacing, attachment density and edge-zone detailing all need specifying for local wind loads rather than to a generic standard.
