There Is No Alberta Solar Rebate. There Is Municipal Financing.
It is worth being blunt about this, because a homeowner arriving from a comparison site will have read about rebates that do not exist here.
Alberta has no residential solar rebate. Ontario pays up to $10,000 towards solar panels and battery storage together through its Home Renovation Savings Program. Nova Scotia’s equivalent closed in April 2025. Saskatchewan never had one. Alberta’s position is the same as Saskatchewan’s: no provincial cheque towards the cost of a system.
What Alberta does have, in participating municipalities, is the Clean Energy Improvement Program. CEIP finances energy upgrades through a charge on the property rather than a personal loan, so the obligation attaches to the property and transfers to the next owner on sale. Leduc participates, alongside Edmonton, Calgary, Airdrie, Canmore, Okotoks, St. Albert, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie.
The terms are set by each municipality rather than provincially, so the rate, maximum and repayment period in Leduc are the City’s to set and worth confirming directly before you build a budget around them.
This changes where the negotiation happens. In Ontario a homeowner argues about which rebates they qualify for. In Alberta there is nothing to qualify for, so the numbers that matter are the installed price and the financing rate. A quote that is $2,000 cheaper matters more here than in a province where a rebate would have absorbed part of the difference.
Ask for the cash price and the financed price separately, and ask whether the installer has run projects through Leduc’s CEIP process.
Your Wires Company and Your Energy Company Are Different Businesses
Alberta’s deregulated market changes how a solar quote should be read, and it catches out anyone comparing against a regulated province.
FortisAlberta owns the distribution wires reaching your Leduc home and handles your solar interconnection. It does not sell you electricity. That comes from a retailer you choose — ENMAX, ATCO Energy, Direct Energy and others compete for the business — so your bill carries regulated distribution charges on one side and a contracted energy rate on the other.
Under Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation you earn credits at the full retail rate for what you export, there are no interconnection fees, and credits are applied monthly. But “full retail rate” means your retailer’s rate. Two Leduc households with identical arrays and identical production can be credited differently because they are on different contracts.
The Rate of Last Resort quoted on this page, about 12.01 cents per kilowatt-hour, is the fallback for customers who have not chosen a retailer. It is a fair planning figure and it may not be yours.
The practical consequence is specific to Alberta: part of your solar payback was determined when you signed an electricity contract, possibly years ago. Before comparing quotes, find the energy rate on your own bill. Then ask each installer which rate their projection used — a saving calculated on the Rate of Last Resort will be wrong for anyone on a competitive contract, and wrong in whichever direction their contract differs.
1,255 kWh per kW Is Excellent by Any Standard Except Alberta's
Leduc is modelled at 1,255 kWh per kW a year. Set against the rest of the country that is a strong figure: better than every city we serve in Ontario, where Chatham-Kent tops out at 1,210, better than all of Atlantic Canada, and roughly a quarter above the British Columbia coast.
Set against Alberta, it is mid-pack. Okotoks is 1,310, Airdrie and Chestermere 1,290, Edmonton and Cochrane 1,280, Red Deer 1,265. Leduc sits below all of them and above St. Albert at 1,250 and Canmore at 1,200.
The spread across Alberta is about nine per cent from top to bottom, which is narrow enough that no Albertan should pick a town on solar grounds. What it does mean is that a Leduc roof needs marginally more capacity than an Okotoks roof to produce the same output — four per cent more, which on a typical system is a fraction of one panel.
The more useful comparison is against your own bill rather than against another town. At 1,255 kWh per kW, every kilowatt you install produces about 1,255 kilowatt-hours a year, and the question is how many of those you will actually use rather than export. In Alberta, where credits follow your retail contract rather than a fixed tariff, self-consumption is worth knowing about — production you use directly is unambiguous, while production you export is worth whatever your retailer’s rate happens to be.
