Alberta has no provincial residential solar rebate. Canmore is one of a small number of Alberta municipalities that fills that gap locally, and it does so twice over.

The Canmore Solar Incentive Program pays $1,250 towards a residential solar installation. Commercial projects are treated differently, at $750 per kilowatt up to $20,000. Eligibility covers single family homes, duplexes, tri- and four-plexes and individual units, so it is not restricted to detached housing.

Separately, Canmore participates in Alberta’s Clean Energy Improvement Program, which finances energy upgrades through a charge on the property rather than a personal loan — so the balance transfers to the next owner if you sell. Terms are set by each municipality, so confirm the rate, maximum and repayment period with the Town before budgeting around them.

Taken together that is a rebate reducing the cost and a financing route covering what remains, which is a materially better position than most Alberta towns. Chestermere and Cochrane, both on the same distribution network, have neither.

One caveat worth stating: a rebate and a financing programme are administered separately and each sets its own rules, so whether they combine cleanly on your particular project is a question for the Town rather than for an installer. Ask before you assume the two stack.

At 1,200 kWh per kW a year, Canmore’s sunshine is the weakest of the Alberta communities we serve. Its funding is the strongest.

Canmore is modelled at 1,200 kWh per kW a year, and this page’s own assessment attributes the figure to mountain terrain. Against the Alberta communities we serve, that is the lowest: Okotoks is 1,310, Airdrie and Chestermere 1,290, Cochrane 1,280, Leduc 1,255, St. Albert 1,250. The gap from the top is about eight per cent.

That is a real penalty and it is smaller than people expect for a town in the Bow Valley. Canmore at 1,200 still ties Windsor and Ottawa, the joint second-best figures in Ontario, and falls only ten kilowatt-hours short of Chatham-Kent at 1,210 — while comfortably beating the entire British Columbia coast.

What terrain shading does, though, is vary enormously between properties in a way a town-level figure cannot capture. A ridge to the south removes whole blocks of the day rather than scattered hours, and it bites hardest in winter when the sun sits low. A Three Sisters property with open southern exposure and one tucked under a slope in Teepee Town can reach quite different answers.

So the assessment to insist on here is specific: has the horizon been surveyed from your actual roof rather than assumed flat, and does the production model account for terrain rather than only for nearby trees and buildings? A desk estimate is worth less in a mountain valley than almost anywhere else.

The funding is what makes Canmore work despite that — a $1,250 local rebate and CEIP financing against the weakest sunshine in Alberta.

Alberta’s deregulated market catches out anyone comparing a Canmore quote against one from a regulated province, and it changes how a savings estimate should be read.

Under Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation you earn credits at the full retail rate for what you export, there are no interconnection fees, and credits are applied monthly. The phrase doing the work there is “full retail rate”, because in a deregulated market that means your retailer’s rate. Two Canmore households with identical arrays and identical production can be credited differently purely because they signed different contracts.

The Rate of Last Resort quoted on this page, about 12.06 cents per kilowatt-hour, is the fallback for customers who have not chosen a retailer. Treat it as a planning figure rather than as yours.

So the sequence before comparing quotes runs: find the energy rate on your own bill, then ask each installer which rate their projection assumed. A saving built on the Rate of Last Resort will be wrong for anyone on a competitive contract, and in a town where the sunshine is already the weakest in Alberta, you want the rest of the arithmetic to be right.
