THESP Solar Rebate – Registration Closed

NB Power’s Total Home Energy Savings Program offered a flat $200/kW, up to $3,000 for residential solar. Registration closed May 27, 2026 – no new applicants are being accepted. NB Power Net Metering

NB Power credits excess solar at 1:1 at the full retail rate (15.39¢/kWh). Credits carry forward monthly but expire March 31 annually – size your system to match your usage. Systems up to 100 kW. Note: NB Power charges a meter-change and service fee for grid connection.

Disclosure: NB Power has filed a proposal, pending EUB approval, to change net metering from April 1, 2027: new customers would move to a three-part rate with a demand charge, and exports would be credited at a value-of-solar rate instead of 1:1, with final rates set in the 2027/28 rate application. Customers with an approved net-metering application by October 31, 2026 and a passed inspection by October 31, 2027 would keep the current terms for ten years.

Federal Greener Homes Programs – Closed

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in February 2024, and the Greener Homes Loan closed October 1, 2025. Neither is available to new applicants.

Dieppe sits on NB Power’s network, and for solar that is the better side of a provincial divide worth understanding.

NB Power credits excess solar one-for-one at the full retail rate — currently 15.39 cents per kilowatt-hour, effective 14 April 2026 following a 4.29 per cent increase approved by the Energy and Utilities Board. Credits carry forward, so summer production offsets winter consumption rather than expiring monthly.

Compare that with Saint John, an hour down the road, where the municipal utility credits excess generation at about 8.50 cents — its avoided cost, set at 90 per cent of its wholesale power cost, rather than the retail rate. A Saint John household pays less for electricity, at about 13.92 cents, but is credited materially less for what it exports.

For a Dieppe homeowner the practical consequence is a simpler decision. Because exports and imports settle at the same price, the timing of your consumption barely matters — a kilowatt-hour used at two in the afternoon and one banked and used in January are worth the same. That is not true in Saint John, and it is not true in Manitoba or in most of British Columbia any more.

It also means sizing is less fraught. A system somewhat larger than your immediate usage is not penalised the way it would be under a discounted export rate, though building far past your annual consumption still has diminishing value.

At 1,144 kWh per kW a year and a payback of 9 to 13 years, Dieppe’s case rests on a straightforward arrangement rather than on any local subsidy.

NB Power’s residential rate rose to 15.39 cents per kilowatt-hour on 14 April 2026, following a 4.29 per cent increase approved by the Energy and Utilities Board. For most households that is unwelcome. For anyone who already owns solar, it is the opposite.

The logic is worth setting out because it is counterintuitive. A solar system’s value is the electricity you no longer buy. When the price of that electricity rises, the same production displaces more money — so every rate increase improves the return on a system already on the roof. You have, in effect, fixed the price of the share of your consumption the system covers.

And because NB Power credits exports one-for-one at the retail rate, the increase flows through to exported generation as well. In a province with a fixed export price — British Columbia now pays BC Hydro customers 10 cents regardless of retail — a rate rise would lift only the value of self-consumption. In New Brunswick it lifts both.

This is not an argument that rates will keep rising, and it should not be used as one. Payback figures on this page, 9 to 13 years, are calculated against today’s price. If rates rise, the real payback comes sooner than stated; if they hold flat, the figure stands.

What it does mean is that the quoted payback is a conservative number rather than an optimistic one, which is the opposite of how most solar projections are built.
