How fast will my EV charge?

Level 2 home chargers add 25-50 km of range per hour, fully charging most EVs in 4-8 hours overnight. This is up to 7x faster than standard 120V outlets, ensuring you wake up to a fully charged vehicle every morning.

Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel?

It depends on your current electrical capacity. We’ll assess during the site visit and recommend upgrades only if necessary. Most modern homes have sufficient capacity for a Level 2 charger, but older homes may benefit from a panel upgrade.

Can I use solar power to charge my EV?

Yes! We can integrate your charger with your solar system to charge your EV with clean, free energy from the sun. This is one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to fuel your vehicle, potentially reducing your transportation costs to pennies per day.

What rebates are available?

As of 2026, BC is the only province with a home charger rebate (up to $350 through BC Hydro or FortisBC, plus top-ups). Elsewhere, support is mostly low-interest financing, such as Toronto HELP, Ottawa Better Homes or Manitoba Hydro’s Home Energy Efficiency Loan (up to $3,000 for a Level 2 charger). There’s no federal rebate for home chargers. We help you access the programs you qualify for and handle the paperwork.

Will a home EV charger work with all electric vehicles?

Yes! Our Level 2 chargers use the universal J1772 connector that works with all electric vehicles sold in North America, including Tesla (with included adapter), Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and more. One charger supports current and future EVs.

Can I charge my EV during power outages

If you have a backup battery system like SolarEdge or Tesla Powerwall, you can continue charging your EV during grid outages using stored solar energy. This provides true energy independence and ensures your vehicle is always ready.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?

Charging costs vary by electricity rates, but typically range from $2-$5 for a full charge (versus $40-$80 to fill a gas tank). When charging with solar energy, your cost can be virtually zero after the initial system investment, leading to thousands in annual savings.

Is home charging safe?

Absolutely! Our professionally installed Level 2 chargers are CSA and UL certified, include ground-fault protection, and are designed with multiple safety features. All installations are code-compliant and inspected to ensure complete safety for you and your home.

Can you install an EV charger on its own?

No. We install EV chargers as an add-on to another Xolar installation, such as solar panels, so the charger is designed and wired as part of the same project.

EV Charger Installation Cost in Canada

Xolar installs Level 2 home EV chargers as an add-on to another Xolar installation, such as solar panels, not as a standalone job. Added to your project, a charger costs $2,497 before rebates and tax, for either the SolarEdge EV Charger or the Tesla Wall Connector. That includes the charger, design, permits, a standard installation by a licensed electrician, and warranty.

What can add to the cost:

Electrical panel capacity. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240V circuit. If your panel doesn’t have room, a load-management device or a panel upgrade may be needed. We check this at the site visit and only recommend an upgrade if it’s necessary.
Distance from your panel. A charger in a detached garage, or far from the panel, needs a longer wire run and sometimes trenching.

EV charger rebates and financing (2026)

BC is the only province with a home charger rebate right now: BC Hydro and FortisBC pay 50% of the cost, up to $350, for single-family homes, row homes and duplexes, with extra amounts for a power-management device or enrolling the charger in Peak Saver. Elsewhere, support is financing rather than rebates. Toronto’s HELP loan, Ottawa’s Better Homes loan (as part of a larger retrofit; its minimum is $10,000) and Manitoba Hydro’s Home Energy Efficiency Loan (up to $3,000 for a Level 2 charger, over 5 years) all cover home chargers. There’s no federal rebate for home chargers. See current rebates.
