Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We've got answers. Find the most common questions about this product below.

The cost of a Tesla Powerwall varies depending on your location and specific setup needs, and whether it is being combined with solar or as a stand-alone solution.  A stand-alone Powerwall will cost around $25,000 to install. When combined with a solar panel installation, it can be added to the system for under $20,000.   Complete Powerwall systems range from $25,000-$60,000+ depending on whether you install a stand-alone Powerwall, Powerwall with solar, and whether or not you choose to add any Powerwall Expansion units.  Contact our technical sales team for a detailed quote tailored to your home and energy requirements.
A 13.5 kWh Powerwall can provide backup power for 8-12 hours for essential needs, though run time will vary depending on your energy usage. The Powerwall will absorb energy generated by your solar panels in real-time during daylight hours, significantly increasing its effective runtime capability. When paired with solar, you can maintain power indefinitely during power outages as your Powerwall will continuously recharge itself.
Yes, a Tesla Powerwall can run an air conditioner, but the duration will depend on how much power it consumes and the battery’s charge level. With 5 kW of continuous power in backup, Powerwall 3 can handle most residential AC units. When paired with solar panels, the system can recharge while running your AC during daylight hours.
Yes, the Tesla Powerwall is designed to be installed indoors or outdoors, with a durable design that withstands various weather conditions. It operates reliably in temperatures from -20°C to 50°C and is rated for outdoor use in Canadian climates. The weather-resistant enclosure protects against rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.  Powerwall is equipped with thermal self-regulation technology to manage it’s own internal temperature.  In colder conditions, Powerwall can pre-heat its battery cells so that charging and discharging remain possible even when ambient temperatures drop well below freezing.
The Tesla app allows you to track energy production, consumption, and storage in real-time, offering complete control over your system. You can monitor your battery charge level, see how much solar energy you’re generating, track your grid usage, and control backup settings all from your smartphone. The app also provides notifications about system status and performance.
A single Powerwall can power essential loads for 1-2 days depending on usage. Multiple units provide extended backup. When paired with solar, you can maintain power indefinitely during sunny conditions.
Yes! Powerwall can be installed either as a stand-alone backup or alongside any existing solar installation. The Powerwall can be installed alongside any solar panel setup for maximum flexibility. We’ll assess your current setup and ensure seamless integration.
Powerwall automatically detects outages and switches to backup power in milliseconds. You won’t even notice the lights flicker. Your home will go into backup mode instantaneously without interruption, forming an island that runs only on solar and battery storage.
Tesla Powerwall is warrantied for 10 years. It’s designed to last 15+ years with minimal degradation.
A standard Powerwall installation will not operate if the grid is disconnected.  To operate off-grid, Powerwall must be installed in an off-grid configuration.  While technically possible to go off-grid with enough Powerwall Expansion units and solar panels, we recommend staying grid-connected for maximum reliability and to take advantage of net metering credits.

What Is the Tesla Powerwall and How Does It Work with Solar?

The Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to store energy for residential use. When paired with solar panels, the Powerwall stores excess solar energy generated during the day so you can use it at night, during peak rate hours, or when the grid goes down. Without a battery, any solar energy your home doesn't use immediately gets exported to the grid. With a Powerwall, you keep that energy for yourself.

The system works automatically. During daylight hours, your solar panels generate electricity. Your home uses what it needs first, and the surplus charges your Powerwall. Once the battery is full, any remaining excess flows to the grid through net metering. At night or during an outage, the Powerwall discharges to power your home. The Tesla app gives you real-time visibility into energy production, consumption, and battery charge level.

Solar Inverter (up to 20 kW)

Simplifies installation

The Powerwall 3 integrates a solar inverter directly into the battery unit, handling up to 20 kW of solar input. This eliminates the need for a separate string inverter, reducing installation complexity and cost. The 11.5 kW continuous output means you can run high-draw appliances (air conditioning, EV chargers, heat pumps) simultaneously during an outage. Operating range is -20°C to 50°C, rated for Canadian winters. Up to 4 units can be stacked for 54 kWh total storage.

Tesla Powerwall Cost in Canada

Powerwall pricing in Canada depends on your province, installation complexity, and whether you're adding it to an existing solar system or installing both together. A single Powerwall 3 typically runs between $15,000 and $18,000 CAD installed. Solar + Powerwall packages start around $35,000 for a complete system.

Provincial rebates can reduce the net cost significantly. Ontario's HRSP offers $5,000 specifically for battery storage (on top of $5,000 for solar, capped at $12,000 total). BC Hydro's program includes $5,000 for batteries. Several other provinces have active or upcoming battery incentive programs. See our full pricing breakdown for system-specific costs, or check rebates available in your province.

The financial return depends on your electricity rate structure. In provinces with time-of-use pricing (Ontario, parts of BC), the Powerwall pays for itself faster by charging during off-peak hours and discharging during expensive peak periods. In provinces with flat rates, the primary value is backup power and maximizing solar self-consumption.

Powerwall and Net Metering in Canada

Net metering lets you earn credits for excess solar energy sent to the grid. The Powerwall adds a strategic layer: instead of exporting all your excess at whatever your utility pays, you can store it and use it during peak rate hours when electricity costs the most. In Ontario's time-of-use system, this means charging your Powerwall at 7.6¢/kWh overnight and avoiding 15.7¢/kWh peak rates.

In provinces with true 1:1 net metering (Ontario, BC, Nova Scotia), the Powerwall's primary value is backup power and peak-shaving rather than avoiding export. In provinces with lower export rates like Manitoba (4.39¢/kWh) or Saskatchewan (7.5¢/kWh), keeping that energy for self-consumption via Powerwall is worth considerably more than exporting it.

One important note: under Ontario's HRSP, systems that receive the solar rebate ($5,000) cannot participate in net metering. However, the battery rebate ($5,000) has no such restriction. We help every customer model the optimal configuration for their province and rate plan. Learn more about net metering across Canada .

Rebates

Battery Storage Incentives by Province

Ontario

HRSP: $5,000 battery rebate. Combined with solar ($5K), up to $10,000 off. Program cap $12,000 total. HELP/Better Homes property-tax financing also available.

British Columbia

BC Hydro: $5,000 battery rebate. Note: accepting the rebate switches your export rate to 10¢/kWh. Skipping the rebate preserves 1:1 net metering for 20 years.

Nova Scotia

No active battery-specific rebate, but 1:1 net metering at ~18.5¢/kWh and high outage frequency make Powerwall a strong investment for backup + savings.

NWT

AEA rebate up to $20,000 for diesel communities (Inuvik eligible). Electricity rates of 30-60¢/kWh make battery storage extremely cost-effective.

More Tesla Powerwall Questions

How much does a Tesla Powerwall cost in Canada? +

A single Tesla Powerwall 3 costs $15,000 to $18,000 CAD installed, depending on your province and installation complexity. After provincial rebates (up to $5,000 in Ontario and BC), the net cost can be as low as $10,000. Solar + Powerwall packages start around $35,000 before incentives. We provide exact pricing in your free quote based on your specific home and energy needs.

How many Powerwalls do I need? +

Most Canadian homes need one Powerwall for essential backup (lights, fridge, internet, sump pump) or two for whole-home backup including high-draw appliances like air conditioning, heat pumps, and EV chargers. A single Powerwall provides 13.5 kWh of storage, enough for 8-12 hours of essential use. If you want multi-day backup or have a larger home (3,000+ sq ft), two or three units give you 27-40.5 kWh. We size your system based on your actual energy usage data.

Does Tesla Powerwall work without solar panels? +

Yes. The Powerwall can operate as a standalone battery without solar panels. In this configuration, it charges from the grid during off-peak hours and discharges during peak hours to save on time-of-use electricity costs. It also provides backup power during outages. However, pairing with solar panels maximizes the financial return because you're storing free solar energy instead of paying for grid electricity to charge the battery.

Is the Tesla Powerwall worth it in Canada? +

It depends on your province and priorities. For homeowners in Ontario, BC, or NWT where electricity rates are higher and battery rebates are available, the Powerwall delivers strong financial returns alongside backup protection. In provinces with lower rates and flat pricing (Manitoba, Saskatchewan), the value is primarily in outage protection. If you experience frequent power outages, need backup for medical equipment, or want energy independence, the Powerwall is worth it regardless of province. With a 10-year warranty and 15+ year expected lifespan, the cost amortizes well over time.
