Can I sell surplus solar power to the grid in Yukon?
Yukon’s Micro-generation Program lets homes, businesses, and industry with a grid-connected solar PV (or other renewable) system sell surplus energy — but it is not 1:1 net metering.
The program reimburses up to a maximum of 65% of your system’s annual modelled generation capacity, paid out each April, with no credit or rollover to future years (and the rate is subject to change).
Important: as of early 2026, micro-generation intakes are paused for all communities while grid-stability work is underway, so contact the Energy Branch (micro-generation@yukon.ca) before planning a grid-tied project.
What rebate can Yukon homeowners get for installing solar?
Yukon’s Residential Renewable Energy Rebate pays $800 per kilowatt of generating capacity, up to a maximum of $5,000, for solar PV (as well as wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal systems).
Grid-tied solar must be part of the Micro-generation Program to qualify, and you’ll need a signed interconnection agreement or a final approved electrical inspection.
Rebates are paid within about 12 weeks.
The program is funded in part by the federal Low Carbon Economy Fund.
Do I need approval before installing a solar system in Yukon?
Yes.
For grid-connected systems you must get pre-approval from the Yukon government’s Energy Branch before you install anything.
The process starts with a one-hour meeting with an energy advisor — who reviews your renewable options, available incentives, and system economics — followed by a pre-approval application, which your installer can submit on your behalf.
You’ll also need a Micro-generation Interconnection and Operating Agreement and a final approved electrical inspection.
Are the federal Canada Greener Homes grants still available in Yukon?
No.
Both federal programs have closed — the Canada Greener Homes Grant stopped accepting submissions at the end of 2025, and the Canada Greener Homes Loan is also closed to new applications.
Today the main incentives for Yukon homeowners are the territorial Residential Renewable Energy Rebate ($800/kW up to $5,000) and, once intakes reopen, the Micro-generation Program.
Does solar make financial sense in Yukon?
Solar can work in Yukon, but the economics differ from southern Canada.
Long summer days deliver strong summer production while short winter days yield very little, and with the Micro-generation Program reimbursing only up to 65% of modelled generation (with no rollover) and intakes currently paused, most of the value comes from offsetting your own consumption plus the up-front $800/kW rebate.
The Energy Branch’s advisors provide a free system-economics review as part of the pre-approval process.
Solar in Yukon: Rates Are Rising Sharply
Yukon electricity costs about 28.4 cents per kWh, and ATCO Electric Yukon rates rose 33.8% in April 2026 – one of the steepest single-year increases anywhere in Canada. For homeowners, that changes the arithmetic on self-generation considerably.
Whitehorse produces roughly 1,100 kWh per kW installed per year. As in the Northwest Territories, the seasonal swing is pronounced: very long summer days drive strong production from spring to autumn, with little contribution in deep winter.
An important caveat before you plan around net metering. Yukon’s Micro-generation programme compensates up to 65% of a system’s modelled output, paid out each April with no rollover of unused credit – and new intakes are currently paused. Until intakes reopen, a Yukon system should be sized around what your household actually uses during daylight hours, because export compensation cannot be relied on. We will tell you plainly where that leaves your numbers before you commit.

Good Energy Rebate – up to $5,000
The Yukon government’s Good Energy programme offers up to $5,000 toward residential solar. It remains the primary incentive available to Yukon homeowners and is unaffected by the micro-generation intake pause.
Micro-generation – intakes paused
When open, the programme compensates up to 65% of modelled system output, paid each April with no credit rollover. New intakes are paused at present, so we size Yukon systems for self-consumption and treat any future export revenue as upside rather than as part of the base case.
Federal Programs
The Canada Greener Homes Grant closed in March 2024 and the Greener Homes Loan in October 2025. Neither is open to new applicants.
