North Battleford benefits from Saskatchewan’s exceptional solar irradiance at 1,310 kWh/kW – among the highest in Canada. SaskPower provides electricity with net metering credits at 7.5¢/kWh. While payback is longer than provinces with retail-rate credits (13-17 years), rising SaskPower rates (3.9% increase in 2026) improve the long-term economics.

SaskPower’s net metering program allows residential systems up to 100 kW. Excess energy is credited at 7.5¢/kWh – credits never expire until your account closes.

The current net metering program has been extended to March 31, 2029. Terms after 2029 have not been announced.

There is no provincial solar rebate from SaskPower. The federal Greener Homes programs are now closed.

Within Saskatchewan, North Battleford is not a standout. Ranked against the eight Saskatchewan cities on this site it comes seventh: Estevan leads at 1,400 kWh per kW, then Swift Current 1,380, Moose Jaw 1,370, Regina 1,340, Yorkton 1,330, Saskatoon 1,320, North Battleford 1,310 and Prince Albert 1,300.

That is a spread of under eight per cent across the entire province, which tells you the ranking barely matters. Every one of those cities has a genuinely excellent solar resource by Canadian standards.

The comparison that does matter is the one across provincial lines. North Battleford’s 1,310 exceeds every city we serve in Ontario — Chatham-Kent, the best in that province, is 1,210, and the Greater Toronto Area sits between 1,140 and 1,170. A panel here produces roughly eight per cent more than in Chatham-Kent and about twelve per cent more than in Mississauga.

And yet the payback quoted here is 13 to 17 years against 7 to 10 in Chatham-Kent and 8 to 12 in Mississauga. Producing more electricity and waiting twice as long to recover the cost is a genuinely counterintuitive result, and it has nothing to do with the weather.

The next section sets out why, because it is the single most important thing for a North Battleford homeowner to understand before comparing a local quote against one a relative received in Ontario.

Two things make the payback long in Saskatchewan, and neither is fixable by choosing a different installer.

The first is that there is no rebate. Ontario homeowners can claim up to $10,000 through the Home Renovation Savings Program for solar panels and battery storage together. Saskatchewan has no residential equivalent, so a North Battleford system starts from full price. Against the average saving quoted here of about $2,300 a year, that gap alone accounts for something in the order of four years of payback.

The second is the shape of the bill. SaskPower charges an energy rate of 15.476 cents per kilowatt-hour plus a basic charge of $31.16 a month — about $374 a year — that you pay whatever you generate. Solar displaces the energy charge and cannot touch the basic charge, so a portion of your bill is simply outside the reach of any system.

So who does this suit? Someone staying in the house for the long term, who wants to fix a large part of their electricity cost against future increases, and who is not treating the system as a financial product with a quick return. Thirteen to seventeen years on equipment that operates for twenty-five is a real return; it is just a slow one, and it is unforgiving if you move in year six.

One thing genuinely favours Saskatchewan, and it is worth weighing: SaskPower net metering credits do not expire, so a large summer surplus stays available against winter consumption rather than being written off at an anniversary date.
