How your system works behind the meter
Most of a St. John’s system's value comes from power used behind the meter — electricity your panels make and your home uses on the spot, offsetting energy you'd otherwise buy at 15.587¢/kWh. Only the surplus flows past the meter to Newfoundland Power for net-metering credit.

Net Metering in St. John's - Important Details
Newfoundland Power’s net metering credits monthly excess solar at 1:1 at the retail rate (15.587¢/kWh). However, any surplus credits at your annual anniversary are settled at the wholesale rate – significantly less than retail.
This means it’s crucial to size your system to match your annual usage, not exceed it. Over-sizing won’t provide proportional financial returns. Systems up to 100 kW are eligible, with a 5 MW provincial aggregate cap.
No Provincial Solar Rebate
NL does not currently offer any residential solar rebate. The NL Green Technology Tax Credit (20%) exists but is only for incorporated businesses. Both federal Greener Homes programs are now closed (Grant: February 2024, Loan: October 2025).
