Canada Greener Homes Grant & Loan (2026): What Closed and What Replaced It

Last updated: July 2026 · Reviewed by Xolar

Quick answer: The Canada Greener Homes Grant (up to $5,000) closed to new applicants in February 2024, and the Canada Greener Homes Loan (interest-free, up to $40,000) closed on October 1, 2025. Neither is open to new projects. The federal replacement is the income-tested Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) — and for most homeowners, provincial rebates are now the main way to save on solar. Federal programs at a glance (2026)

What was the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

Launched in May 2021 as the core of the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, the Grant offered homeowners up to $5,000 toward energy-efficient retrofits — including solar panel installations and heat pumps — plus up to $600 toward the required pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations. It stopped accepting new applicants in February 2024 after its ~$2.6 billion in funding (good for roughly 700,000 grants) was fully subscribed. If you are searching for it today, it is no longer open — the sections below cover what replaced it.

What the grant required (historical)

The Grant was a nationwide program with some province-specific details, but the base requirements were the same across Canada. Homeowners had to complete a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation before starting work and a post-retrofit evaluation after, and to qualify you had to:

  • prove ownership with a property tax bill number;
  • prove the home was your primary residence with government-issued ID; and
  • wait until after your EnerGuide evaluation before beginning the retrofit.

Eligible home types (historical)

  • Single and semi-detached houses
  • Townhomes and row housing
  • Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
  • Permanently moored floating homes
  • Multi-unit residential buildings (three storeys or less)

What was the Canada Greener Homes Loan (and the loan portal)?

The interest-free Greener Homes Loan was paired with the Grant to help fund deeper retrofits. It offered $5,000–$40,000 over a 10-year term, applied for through the online loan portal, with 15% disbursed up front as a down payment. It closed to new applications on October 1, 2025. Homeowners with an already-approved loan are still being serviced, but the portal is closed to new applicants. For a deeper look, see our dedicated article on the Canada Greener Homes Loan.

What replaced them: the Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP)

Announced in 2025, CGHAP is the federal successor — but it works differently. It is income-tested (aimed at low-to-median-income households) and delivered as direct-install retrofits through provincial partners rather than a cash-back grant, and solar eligibility varies by province. If your household may qualify, it can cover a large share of an efficiency retrofit. Learn more at Natural Resources Canada.

Heat with oil• The OHPA program (closing July 31, 2026)

If your home is heated with oil, the federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program pays up to $10,000 (in federal-only provinces: Alberta, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Quebec and Saskatchewan) or up to $15,000 in co-delivery provinces to switch to a heat pump. It is closing soon — the last day to apply is July 31, 2026.

The bigger opportunity in 2026: provincial rebates

With the universal federal programs closed, provincial rebates are now the primary savings for most solar buyers, and they often stack with municipal financing. A quick tour:

  • Ontario — Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP): up to $5,000 for solar plus $5,000 for a battery ($1,000/kW), funded through November 30, 2026.
  • British Columbia — BC Hydro: up to $5,000 solar and up to $5,000 battery, plus a PST exemption on solar equipment.
  • Manitoba — Efficiency Manitoba: $0.50/W up to $5,000, plus a Manitoba Hydro loan up to $20,000.
  • Alberta: no direct grant, but $0-down CEIP property-tax financing in participating municipalities.
  • Nova Scotia: strong 1:1 net metering (~19¢/kWh) plus a home battery rebate up to $2,500.
  • Saskatchewan: net metering at 7.5¢/kWh, locked in through 2029.
  • New Brunswick: the Total Home Energy Savings Program’s solar rebate closed to new enrolment on May 27, 2026. See our New Brunswick program guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still get the Greener Homes Loan or use the loan portal?

No — the loan portal closed to new applications on October 1, 2025. Existing approved loans are still being serviced.

What replaced the Greener Homes programs?

The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP), an income-tested, direct-install program for low-to-median-income households, plus province-specific rebates.

Are there still solar rebates in Canada?

Yes. Provincial programs now lead — Ontario’s HRSP, BC Hydro, Efficiency Manitoba and more — often stackable with municipal financing. See your rebates.
