Tesla products dropped by BC Hydro’s $5,000 energy storage rebate

As of March 12, 2025, Tesla products no longer qualify for

BC Hydro’s $5000 energy storage rebate
. The reason given is to direct Canadian tax dollars away from American companies as a countermeasure in the tariff war between Canada and the USA.

Ontario recently announced a

Home Renovation Savings Program
which promises homeowners a $10,000 rebate for solar plus battery storage. This development begs the question of whether they will follow in BC Hydro’s footsteps and drop the Powerwall from their program eligibility as well.

As of right now, we do not know of any Canadian-made batteries that compete with the Tesla Powerwall, but there are alternative products such as the SolarEdge and Growatt batteries which are manufactured in Asia and considered to be tier-1 alternatives.

On the one hand, this move keeps Canadian tax dollars out of America, but on the other hand, the Tesla Powerwall is widely considered to be the best residential battery available on the market.

Xolar is a proudly Canadian company and our position is that we would prefer to offer Canadian products across the board provided that those products offer similar value for the money for our customers. Perhaps this can be a call-to-action for Canadian manufacturers to develop more advanced home energy storage products domestically.
