Saskatchewan's Solar Potential

Saskatchewan is the best province for solar energy production in all of Canada, receiving more sunlight than any other province or territory. Solar installations in Saskatchewan are highly efficient, overperforming to an average of 1330 kWh of electricity per year for every 1 kW installed. The major population centers receive ample sunlight, surpassing the province’s already impressive average solar panel performance.

Saskatchewan has the fourth highest electricity costs of Canadian provinces. Saskatchewan’s power prices are about 25% higher than the national average. Saskatchewan also tends to have power rate increases of 1-3% yearly. The more you pay for electricity – the more you benefit by going solar. Choosing solar energy allows you to save money by avoiding these high electricity rates. With energy prices expected to rise, going solar protects you from increasing costs by generating your own power.

Your solar system will connect to the grid via the Net-Metering program. Excess energy you produce is credited by your power company at roughly half of the retail electricity rate, balancing out your usage across day and night, as well as summer and winter months. The net metering program has connection costs which differ depending on your energy provider. The costs of electricity, abundant sunlight, and the Net-Metering program in Alberta make it one of the best places in all of North America for solar.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens to my solar panels if I sell my property?

Solar panels are a physical asset that can increase the value of your home, just like any other home improvement. Your net-metering contract with the utility is fully transferable to the next homeowner at no cost, which will make your home stand out in the market.  We recommend that you sell the system with the house,  to further increase your return on investment on top of your monthly energy bill savings.

How will installing solar panels affect my home insurance?

The answer to this question depends on which insurance provider you are with.  Some insurance providers do not charge extra to cover solar, and others may increase their annual premium, while some insurance companies will not cover solar at all.  Ask your provider what their policy surrounding solar panels is, and we can support you with resources if you need to transition to another provider.

Does installing solar panels damage the roof?

Simply put, it is important to hire a professional, experienced company with plenty of past installations and positive reviews, and avoid temptation to go with the cheapest quote.  An experienced solar installer will minimize the number of penetration points needed to install the racking.  Using premium roof anchoring technology, in addition to tried and true installation and weatherproofing methods, we will guarantee the integrity of your roof with our warranty.  The racking is bolted to the trusses, which is very sturdy!  All of our projects are reviewed by our structural engineer prior to installing.  For your protection, we also carry a $5,000,000 liability insurance policy.

Do solar panels require maintenance?

A grid tie solar panel installation may need maintenance from time to time:

  1. Reconnecting the system monitoring to the internet if you change internet provider or wifi password.
  2. Firmware updates from the inverter manufacturer to benefit from the latest technology.
  3. Replacing failed components under warranty.
  4. Annual cleaning to remove debris such as leaves etc.

We offer a very affordable maintenance plans with our systems, in addition to 25 year product manufacturer warranties.

Does XOLAR INC gaurantee I will save money?

We do not guarantee kWh production numbers because system performance will vary from site to site, but the literature is there to show that solar panels work and that by installing solar power you will save money on your energy bills.  We have plenty of system monitoring data from many installations that we have done, in addition to a library of testimonials and positive reviews.

  1. We only install best in class products that carry minimum performance warranties provided by the manufacturer, to protect your investment.
  2. We recommend that all of our customers do independent research and only move forward with us once they feel confident in their decision.

Will snow affect my solar panels?

  1. Solar panels heat up while operational and will melt light snow loads without any issue.
  2. Heavy snow will impact the power output of your panels, but those losses are already accounted for in our projections.
  3. If your system is tied to the grid, you will generate enough energy credits in the summer to offset your high winter bills.
  4. If your system is off grid, you should generally install more solar panels to ensure redundancy of production in the darker winter months.

What if my solar panels stop working?

We only install top brands which have a reputation for their bankability and ease of processing warranty claims.  We choose the products we offer carefully to ensure that if one of your system components were to fail, there are processes in place to have it replaced under warranty. In addition to our standard labor warranty, we also offer a very affordable maintenance plan to ensure that you are set up for success for years to come.

What if my interconnection application is rejected?

If your application to connect to the grid is rejected by the power company, your down payment will be refunded in full without question.  We recommend submitting your application as soon as possible, as grid spots are limited per area.  If your application is rejected, we recommend re-applying on an annual basis until it is accepted as more grid capacity may become available in the future as they perform upgrades.

Can I add batteries to my system in the future?

Yes, our systems are easily expandable to include battery storage.  The wiring of your grid-tied system can be easily changed to feed into your critical loads panel or battery bank, ensuring that you have power during outages.   All while still retaining the ability to export power to the grid during normal operation.

Can I expand my system later?

Yes, if you think that your usage will increase in the future or you only have a budget to start with a smaller system, we can size the inverter to allow room for more solar panels in the future.  Simply let us know that you are considering this.  All of our technical sales reps are trained on how to correctly size and design PV equipment to suit your needs.
